Yes, unless some other software was somehow running on the same port, which is extremely unlikely.

It's like baseball.  There has to be a catcher if the pitcher wants to throw strikes.  Network activity requires software on both sides.

The best way to learn about this is to do a Google search.  Wikipedia probably explains port forwarding.

To see what's probably open already you could surf to https://www.grc.com - and run Shields Up. Also, you'll find the one or other explanation what a port does or not. Like: telling you're there - for instance.
Generally speaking: it's simply not safe to connect anything to the internet. But very convenient.  8)
