Large shadows under subtitles. (picture included)

I seem to be having yet another issue which no amount of trouble shooting can solve. When playing any file with subtitles, except ones with pgs subs because those just won't work, I'm getting rather large shadows under the subtitles which make some of them difficult to read. This isn't happening in VLC nor is it happening on the windows version. I've tried changing the font but none of the changes I make even stay and I've tried changing the size but that doesn't work either.
