Recommendations for video editing program
« on: November 08, 2018, 11:26:21 am »

Greetings,

I am looking for a free or consumer price level video editing program.

Intent is to edit home videos, and also extract and patch clips from JR OTA recordings or from commercial movies (Blu-ray in mkv container, copy protection removed) for family use
H.265 4K support is "nice to have" for the future but certainly not essential.

I have searched through the forums, but recommandations seem quite old...

Cheers.

DaVinci Resolve 15, hands down would be my recommendation for video editing. It's free (avoid the paid DaVinci Resolve 15 Studio version), cross-platform with versions for Windows, Mac and Linux and it's one of if not the best video editing software out there, in my opinion.

I think you may be limited with Resolve for a wide range of format support for "family use" as it support is more for production formats - http://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/DaVinciResolve/20180406-341247/DaVinci_Resolve_15_Supported_Codec_List.pdf

While not free I use Cyberlink PowerDirector (I'm also one of their testers) and it does most formats.  One thing that you will struggle to edit is MC's JTV format (so use TS if you want to edit OTA Recordings).  If you do record in JTV then you can try this method to later convert to TS for editing etc - https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,107498.msg746546.html#msg746546

Every camera and phone I've got in my house records video in one of the formats listed in that document. I would be surprised if any of your home video is not editable in DaVinci Resolve. Older versions used to be unable to handle the audio format that consumer cameras would embed in AVCHD recordings, but that's not true with version 15. I'm not sure about the TV recordings. I think Resolve is well worth the (free) download and some trial work to see if it suits your needs (and can run well on your system).

I shy away from consumer-oriented video editing software, because it usually is poorly designed and heavily limited, so I can't say I've even really tried CyberLink's PC editor. But it's worth mentioning that they do produce an Android version of PowerDirector also, which is the most solid phone-based video editor I've found by far (at least on the Android platform).

I also recommend PowerDirector. It has handled everything I've thrown at it and done a nice job. Don't pay full price though... get on their mailing list before you buy!

Thank you all,   I downloaded Resolve 15 and it looks promising so far.
