[SOLVED] MC24 Server Crash
« on: April 19, 2018, 02:57:34 pm »

Set MC24 Server to comcast music channel in theater view, powered off Tv, sound playing from AVR speakers, left the house for a few hours. All clients idle.

When I got back home, the audio was no longer playing through the AVR speakers. I powered on the tv and found MC had dropped out of theater view - actually it appeared to be minimized to taskbar, showing a small pure black window in the upper right corner of the tv screen. I was unable to restore theater view, clicking on MC in the taskbar would only minimize/restore the all black window. When I moved the mouse over the all black window, the pointer would change to a busy (spinning) cursor. Then I clicked on the all black window and MC24 crashed.

Have you started music playback and turned off the TV before, and if so, has it worked? For the same length of time?

That sounds like your PC lost its HDMI connection and hence decided it couldn't play audio anymore. While MC shouldn't crash, basically the rug has been pulled out from under MC. It effectively lost the driver that enabled playback. There have been discussions about this stuff before. I think the only way to fix the issue if you really want to turn off the TV was to use one of the HDMI curing devices. Doctor HDMI or something? Those devices maintain an HDMI connection to the PC with the correct parameters and hence audio playback continues.

If your AVR acted as an HDMI endpoint, rather than working as a Passthrough, then the PC may continue to work. But then you may have video issues, depending on the AVR capabilities, whether it wants to alter the video signal when not in Passthrough mode, and so on.

Yes, I have done this hundreds of times, leaving just the AVR on playing the sound for hours and hours.

Even though the AVR is set for "passthrough", the GPU drivers don't even detect the Tv - only detects the AVR. Same for MC audio device - only shows the AVR. Same for madVR - only detects the AVR.

Now, besides upgrading from MC23 to MC24, I also upgraded my video card from GT640 to GTX1060. And because I will soon be running at 4k, I have disconnected my Dr. HDMI (it only does 1080p). I really hope I don't have to get a 4k Fury, they are almost $200. If this becomes a repeat issue, guess I will try a cheaper 4k powered switch.

Still interested in what the MC logs say...

I have not found anything interesting yet.  I am still looking.  There is not a line in the log that says "crashing".  So whatever was the cause of the crash, it was probably not captured in the log.

Please don't send us logs unless we request them.  They take a lot of time to analyze, so we don't do it for every problem.

This one is probably just a problem with HDMI.

Problem did happen again the very next time I tried to run music channel audio with the tv off.

I got a 3x1 4k 60Hz 4:4:4 HDMI switch. Installed it where I had the Dr. HDMI (between the PC and the AVR), but it did NOT help. Then I tried it between the AVR and the Tv, and everything is good  :)
