Why do I have to pay?
« on: June 11, 2003, 02:02:55 pm »

I just purchased Media Jukebox 8 on April 24th, not even two months ago, and I have to pay 20 bucks to upgrade to media Center 9? That is costing me almost $45 dollars!  :'( It would have been cheaper to purchase the Media Center for $39 bucks! I love your product but you are getting as bad as Norton with the upgrade charges..... Can't you please cut me some slack on this?

OK ,but all of it is not really clear.

People may think about to buy MC8 because the price is ok.

Sorry ,but MC is NOT cheap-- i do not means MC not worth the price you pay-

If someone  want to buy  MJ8 , maybe a pop-up telling him about MC ,the price of an upgrade , that THERE IS NOT  free upgrade from MJ8 to MC9 may help.

And why he did not  buy MC9 first ,because it is $40.

For King ,many others ,including myself ,it is not big money.
For others it is money .
Everyone need to understand it

Well, since you have elected yourself to be his spokesman ;), my response would be that there are free alternatives available.  When I was in college (many years ago), just because I didn't have the money to buy a Porche didn't mean I felt a need to go to the Porche dealer and complain about their high prices.  No, instead I just bought a cheap, second-hand Toyota and was grateful for the transporation. ;D

Anyway, JRiver are some good folks, so I'm sure they'll do him right.  After all, it's not really fair to penalize someone for not wanting to buy a beta product. <shrug>  But I don't run the show, so it's not for me to say I suppose.

Thats why the upgrade price is only $20 and not $40

I did not buy MC because I had no idea it was available. I downloaded the MJ 8 and was impressed with it, so I registered it, that simple. Would have liked it if they had given me the option to check out MC 9 at the time. Oh well live and learn....... Not crying about it, just a little frustrated that's all. It is a great product!

... this sort of thing happens at my online store...

I clearly spell things out for people, and then they call or email asking me what they can clearly read for themselves.

It's frustrating for both sides. I try to be clear...the nature of us (here in America anyway) is "I want it fast and painless for NO effort... well, that doesn't wash.

I would recommend that you treat all things on the web like buying a car...read the contract...read the website, read before you hit purchase or install. People go through a lot of trouble to write instructions, or the like to help people out.

In the army it was, "Be ALERT, the country needs more LERTS!"

Certainly there is a lot of "American culture" at work.  The Circuit Cities (No Hassle Refunds) of the country are conditioning us to expect Customer Service as the foundation of any customer-based organization.

I'm not sure it's a bad idea...  but it's certainly pushed to extremes.

I used to work part time in a Department Store.  A lady came in wanting to return some underwear she had bought - only she had obviously worn them for a few days and her hygiene could have used some improvment.  As a clerk, my answer was "sorry ma'am, but I'm pretty sure there's a law against reselling used undergarments" (this shocked her!).  She complained to the store manager who said "I'm sorry ma'am...  the clerk is new around here.  Of course we'll take them back!"

Now, maybe I'm missing something...  but would JRiver have a pair of unsellable underwear hanging around if they let a customer return MJ and buy MC?

Well, I had the same reaction... I bought MJ 8 because I had used it 7 months before and wanted it.  I got taken to its purchase page and there wasn't an option for MC 9.

That said, saving the extra $5 isn't really that big a deal, since the time I'd waste trying to get a better price or convince people that they should give me a better price, would cost me more than $5.

It's an awesome product... so it's $5 more than it should have been...but at least you get the money spent on MJ 8 towards MC 9.
