Client/server authetification not working

Distro(client):    UbuntuStudio 17.10
Distro(server):  Debian Stretch

Media Center 24.0.19 (64-bit) on both

I was not able to sync the client to server (passwd on server was set) until I configured the server to authenticate always (also for "read only" access).
