Videos not playing in MC24.
« on: May 17, 2018, 10:35:24 am »

Purchased and installed MC24 yesterday.  Just tried playing several videos for the first time just now, but it just starts to open them and then goes back to selection screen.  Tested files and they play fine using other software.  Log file attached.  Any help appreciated.  Have never had a playback problem with MC before.

Code: [Select]
72461453: 6840: Playback: CPlayerZone::JRPlaybackEngine_PlaybackError: Error: Playback could not be started on the selected audio output.

The audio format may not be supported by your hardware.  You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format.

Also, make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options.
72461453: 6840: Playback: CPlayerZone::JRPlaybackEngine_PlaybackError: Finish (0 ms)

You should have seen a popup message about this.  You need to change the audio output format.

No pop up!  AND, just tried playing a FLAC music file, no luck there either.  So basically I have a nice way to view all my media, but no way to play it now.  lol

My hardware is the same as before I upgraded from MC23 to MC24 yesterday.  I did reformat and also upgraded Windows from 7 to 10 at same time.

Have never messed with DSP studio before.  From what I can tell, it looks like you have to set that each time you play something.  Is that correct?  If so, won't that be a pain in the you know what!!  Beginning to think I should have saved my money and not upgraded.  At least with MC23, I just installed, told it where my files were and it played them.

If MC23 is working, go to File > Library > Back Up Library, and close MC23.
Now open MC24 and go to File > Library > Restore Library, and restore the library and settings.

That should hopefully fix your playback issues.
Pop up blocker?
I think it's more likely that the "auto configure output settings on playback error" option was disabled (though it should be on by default), than some other software intercepting Media Center's error messages.

MC23 no longer installed.  As I said, reformatted and upgraded to Windows 10 at same time installed MC24.  So it's a fresh system that has never had MC23 on it.

Also, "auto configure output settings on playback error", is set to ON.

Have been through Playback Options and DSP and messed around changing about anything I thought might be relevant, but still no media playback of any kind, audio or video using MC24.

Okay, first thing: do you have the correct audio device selected in Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device?
Are you using a WASAPI, ASIO, DirectSound, or Kernel Streaming device?

DirectSound is the "easy" option which should play anything you give it, as it will automatically resample any input to match Windows' device settings. This is what most applications use.

WASAPI or ASIO change the device settings to match the source file. A 44.1kHz track sets the device to 44.1kHz, a 192kHz file sets the device to 192kHz etc. This can cause problems if you are trying to play a format that your device does not support.
Kernel Streaming is not recommended.

May be morning before I can respond again, but here is some additional info if it helps.

My system is a self built server in living room.  Here is basic specs:

Operating System     Windows 10 Home 64-bit
          CPU     Intel Core i5 4570S @ 2.90GHz   Haswell 22nm Technology
         RAM      8.00GB Corsair PC3-10700 DDR3 run in Dual-Channel @ 798MHz (9-9-9-24)
       Motherboard      ASRock Z87M Extreme4
Graphics      2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 740 (EVGA)
Storage      119GB SAMSUNG SSD 830 Series SCSI Disk Device (SSD)
Optical Drives       PIONEER BD-RW BDR-209D SCSI CdRom Device

In Windows my sound device options are:

Digital Audio (S/DPIF) (High Definition Audio Device)
Samsung-C (NVIDIA High Definition Audio)
JRiver Media Center 24 (JRiver Media Center 24)

The one I use is the Samsung-C one.  My setup consists of my server running through the Graphics card HDMI to my Yamaha RX-V473 5.1 Receiver, then to my Samsung 1080 LCD via HDMI.

My choices in JRiver are:

Default Audio Device [Direct Sound]
High Definition Audio Device [WASAPI]
Samsung-C (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) [WASAPI]
High Definition Audio Device [Direct Sound]
Samsung-C (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) [Direct Sound]

After playing around with each option in JRiver, the only one I could get to partially work is "High Definition Audio Device [Direct Sound]".  It played video, but no sound.  Based on my setting in Windows sound, I would think  that "Samsung-C (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) [Direct Sound]" would be the correct choice, but changing to it in JRiver results in no vieo or sound.

Anyway, hope something in all that will help someone figure out what may be my problem by the time I get off work in morning.  Thanks to everyone who has offered suggestions so far!!!

Do you have sound working at all on the PC? It seems like this could be more than just an issue with Media Center if none of the devices are working.

Yes,  sound/video works fine outside of MC.   I even installed MPC-HC a little while ago and tried playing same file as did in MC.   It played fine,  with sound through stereo speakers and video to TV.   So,  has to be with an issue setting inside MC.

Can I ask whether you selected the Samsung Wasapi audio renderer when you tried MPC-HC or did you use the default renderer. If you used the default audio renderer I would suggest trying the Samsung Wasapi renderer and see if it still works. Only asking because I see in your logfile that starting the Samsung Wasapi renderer fails every time and then after a number of tries MC gives the playback failure message.

From what I can tell, it looks like you have to set that each time you play something.  Is that correct?

No. DSP settings are attached to playback Zones, and used each time you play to that Zone. Set once, use every time automatically.

As you aren't seeing any popup, try clicking on the following setting. It may have no effect at all, since you seem to have done a clean installation of Windows 10 and MC24, but if you restored a MC23 backup into MC24 as part of the process, the setting would have been carried over.

"Options > General > Advanced > Reset all confirmation messages..."

You may then see a popup message about the playback error when you try to play something.

Well,  was thinking it over all night while I was at work.   Decided that the first option in JRiver,  Default,  should work based on what I assume that means.   That it uses system setting.   So,  when I got home I switched and stayed with it selected and just started changing other settings around.   Not sure which thing I changed fixed it but I now have sound and video playback.

One thing I don't like is that JRiver and/or my server seems to take control of my receivers volume level.   I want control of the volume via my Harmony One remote.   What settings in JRiver affect that?  And in Windows 10 if anyone happens to know.

Thanks again for everyones advice and help!!

Probably going off track here. But it looks to me like you are wired HDMI from PC then to Yamaha amp?

Is there a reason for this?  I would normally run all of my devices to amp and then only a single output from amp to TV.

That is what I have.   HDMI from server to receiver.   Then HDMI from receiver to TV.

Maybe I misread something.  But I thought I read somewhere earlier in the thread where you stated your "Audio Device" was your Samsung TV?

If you are going from server to receiver then your "Audio Device" should be your Receiver (WASAPI) or if possible (Receiver (ASIO).

Edit:  For instance I have an Onkyo TX-NR1008 Receiver.
My "Audio Device" is listed as "TX-NR1008 (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) [WASAPI]

So it clearly indicates that it is going from my Nvidia Graphics card to my Onkyo Receiver.

In Windows my default "Playback Device" is shown as "TX-NR1008".

I am not an expert but this seems to make sense to me since my Audio should be coming from my Receiver and not from my TV.

It is possible to connect PC to TV and then tell the TV to send audio to the receiver.

Don't know what to tell you.  My audio device in Windows does say Samsung,  not my receiver,  but it is wired as I stated.  I've always just assumed it just used Samsung since it was the endpoint in the chain.  When I go to configure settings for the Samsung device in Windows it says it's capable of everything my receiver is,  even shows dts-hd ma,  so it's using the receivers capabilities.

Should I somehow try to get it to officially recognize and base off receiver instead.   If so,  how.   It may be that I need to take the tv out of the chain and reboot computer and see if it picks up receiver itself.  Guess I'd have to hook up a monitor temporarily though so I would still have a display,  lol.  Would there be any significant benefit in doing all that?

Normal- some AVR's will be recognized as audio device by Windows (Denon), some will not (Yami).

In MC have you tried: Tools > Options > Volume > Volume Mode: set to Disabled Volume. This should lock the volume of MC to 100%, then you will control it only with the AVR.

Well, just noticed that my receiver DOES show up under devices in Windows.  Just not listed as sound device choice.  Must be an endpoint thing like I said or something and labeled it as my TV.

Normal - it's just showing up as a network/multimedia/DLNA device.

Take a step back people. This works:

Yes,  sound/video works fine outside of MC.   I even installed MPC-HC a little while ago and tried playing same file as did in MC.   It played fine,  with sound through stereo speakers and video to TV.   So,  has to be with an issue setting inside MC.

Yaobing looked at the log and said this:
You should have seen a popup message about this.  You need to change the audio output format.

Did you  Reset all confirmation messages... as I suggested, and are you getting a popup now?

This audio problem is likely to be a setting in MC, given the above.

Do this simple test. Create a new (additional, separate - keep the existing one) local test library. Most of the setting will be shared, but that is unavoidable without backing up and uninstalling everything related to MC. Import a couple of "problem" videos into the test library. Set up the audio output device without anything extra. Play then videos. Did it work?

No,  I didn't.  Didn't you say that might only be the problem with no error popup if I had MC23 or used a config. file from it.   I didn't.   It was a completely fresh install of MC on a freshly reformated drive.  Should I still reset messages just in case?

It was.   I knew it had to be.  It's working now though.   Just not sure what setting I changed fixed it.   Lol

As I mentioned above,  and earlier,  sound and video are both working now.   I appreciate everyones help getting it fixed.   Just have a few other things I want  to do.   But I will start new topics if need help with them as well.

Should I still reset messages just in case?

If you re-imported everything into MC24 after the new, fresh Windows 10 and MC24 installation, then no need to.

If you saved a backup of the MC23 library and restored that into MC24 including settings along with the library, that settings would have been carried over. So it couldn't hurt to reset the message. It does no harm. It will just start showing popups again, until you dismiss them permanently again.

Anyway, it is working. Good.

Do you know what kind of motherboard you are running? Is this a desktop system?
This might be unrelated:
I've seen at least three systems since December which have trouble making an exclusive connection for multichannel audio for video in MC. Other software seems to be ok. All were Gigabyte 7th gen Intel boards with 7X00K CPUs.
None were resolved adequately. I'm wondering if there is some incompatibility that some hardware has introduced.

Yes,  it's a basically a desktop I built,  just in a Silverstone HTPC case.

I posted basic specs near beginning of this thread.   My board is a ASRock z87m Extreme 4 with an Intel Core i5 4570s cpu.

That would usually be a video driver problem.

Thanks, Jim. I know it is still possible, but it does work for other software, just not MC. For example the default Windows movie software is able to bitstream the same files, so exclusive mode must be working. I was beginning to suspect that the issue was introduced in a Win 10 update to push people towards the new Microsoft media apps!
