Move from MC 20 to MC24?
« on: June 19, 2018, 09:07:22 pm »

I have wanted to upgrade JRiver for a few years now, but given that I only play music what new features improve the listening experience? Many of the new features seem to be focused elsewhere and I'm not the type to use streaming much (although at various times I have subscribed to Tidal). Just trying to justify the expense, but if for music alone the upgrade doesn't really bring much to the table not sure how to rationalize it? I have used MC since version 17 so I'm a big fan. Thoughts anyone?

A lot of new features between your version and the current one.  My favorite new features (since your last upgrade) are the WDM driver and the ability to load all the music into RAM.  I think for the cost, considering how many versions you'd be upgrading, it would be worth it.

Off the top of my head (for audio-only improvements) my top three improvements/features added since MC20 would be...

- SoX resampler
- TPDF dithering
- Memory playback options

Then there's things like the WDM driver, Radio Paradise, etc.

I recommend just trying MC24 (in a trial) and see how well it works for you and see how you like it.

If only for playing music, then there are no new, really useful functions. MC has long been great for music. Trying to improve what is so good, you can only spoil it.

However, Radio Paradise appeared. And it's worth it.

Thank you for the thoughts, I have to agree with all of them! It is true that MediaCenter has for quite sometime been very good for audio. Good enough that I stopped spending ridiculous money on CD players, ripped all of my music to digital files and never looked back.

Just finished my upgrade. It would be nice if third-party plugins that had been previously installed were preserved when the upgrade process happens. Looking forward to using MC 24. Cheers.
