lost partial library
« on: June 24, 2018, 12:42:09 pm »

not sure what happened, but when two of my drives stopped mounting in Windows from my Linux server (don't know why), JRiver removed every file in the library from those drives.

I added the drives back, restarted MC, but the files did not re-appear in the library.  Had to rescan them all back in.

I've not seen this behavior before; does MC auto-clean the library if a drive disappears now or is there a setting that controls this type of behavior?  Obviously the root cause of the problem is why did the drives stop mounting in the first place, but I still surprised I lost all the content on the drives in MC's library.

I'll just say - I know the feeling. Next time something like this happens you could try using the restore MC library from backup option. The problem with that is how often MC does automatic backups (not often enough)... That is why I created a windows scheduled task to backup the MC library every 12 hours and keep the last 10 days worth (20 backups). I even go one step further and backup the MC library backup folder, as well as my MC cover art folders, to an external drive on a schedule.

The option you should change is "Fix broken links ...".

thanks both of you.  i think an automated backup of the lib is prudent.

and i didn't know about the Fix Broken Links, though from an MC perspective, the files simply did no show up in the library.  It wasn't that they were "there" but could not be found.  It is as if I never added them in the first place.

at a loss to explain why; in all the years I've never had this happen.

If it does again I'll collect more forensics and post what I have.

I had the same thing happen recently...twice.

I just checked, and my 'Fix Broken Links' is set to 'Yes (protect files on missing drives)'...what should it be set to?

well so that begs the question - does MC have an option that purges broken links and there is an option to disable this?

For some reason I have had some issues with these two drives disappearing, possibly an SMB issue.  time to check the Ubuntu server.  but regardless - just want to understand how MC can be configured to work here.

That should be the correct setting. If your having trouble with drives not appearing now and then or if you disconnect external usb drives I would suggest that you turn off auto-import for your library - then it shouldn't go looking for stuff to delete.

Yeah...turning off auto import isn't an option.

In my case, they are mapped network drives.  The PC that housed the drives was down for a few days while I swapped the case.  That was the first time it happened.  The it happened again when the PC was down over night.

It wouldn't be so bad, but I have over 3500 episodes of TV on these drives, and it has to re-import them all over again, and then I have to fix the TV series ID on some of them.  Get the correct cover art, etc.

You can restore a backup. MC makes them automatically.
