Sorting Artist/Album and ignoring certain prefixes
« on: June 06, 2003, 11:58:19 am »

Just downloaded and installed the Media Center 9.0.180.  Got it working with my iPod in no time.
In the Artist/Album view, is there a way to have items sorted so that words like "The" and "A" are ignored.  All my bands that start with "The" are grouped down in the T's which is fairly annoying.

Other than that, things ahve been great so far.

chm8v,

I'm not aware of any feature that will allow for this, but I do know that one of the plugins, Album View, does have a feature (a tickbox) that let's you specify that the Album Artist should be listed as "Beatles, The" instead of "The Beatles".  However, the plugin costs an additional amount.  You can download the plugin here http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/downloads/mcplugins.pl?type=10&start=0&end=10&page=1 and try it out for 30 days.  It was written by one of the "super users" of Media Center who goes by the name of "RhinoBanga".  I've used it in the past and it was effective enough to convince me that it was worth it's ~$12 US Dollars (7 quid in the UK) cost, so maybe check that out and see if it will suffice.  Maybe J River will add that feature to MC as a standard feature in the near future.  Shouldn't be too hard to implement...

Hope this helps.

A number of us have been asking for this feature.  Some of the concerns are foreign languages, so a simple list of strings is not good, it must be configurable.

The feature should be available for Artist, Album, and Tracks.

and for that matter, any other field! :) I would think that this would be a great use of the calculated fields.  I actually have two fields for each one that I need sorted.

I have been manually editing to eliminate all the "The"s and "A"s so as not to have everything fall into the T group, but would love to have a way to do this en-masse.
I also often edit the Album/Artist field so as to have the groupings I desire in my 'Media Library - Audio - Artist/Album' list (i.e. I want AfroCelts and AfroCelt Sound System grouped together in this list [same group. different name], and within the 'Afro Celts' group both listed by album).
Perhaps it could be configurable by using "Remove First __ Characters" and "Remove Last __ Characters",
then you could also elinimate things such as track numbers included as part of the track name and such.

you can use find and replace in MC9

Find "The " In Field Artist Replace With ""
Find ", The"  In Field Artist Replace With ""

real easy and quick.

my program will also do this if you want.

Hmm, sounds like it may be an answer, however begs a question . . . .
Will a 'Find & Replace' as you describe also remove the word "The" from the middle of let's say: "Love Is The Answer"?  (Not good if it does)
How do you set-up to change only leading and/or trailing 'THE's?
What about a song title tag of "28-Manic Depression"? If I 'Find & Replace'  "28-" what about "29-Purple Haze" ? . . . . . . a seperate 'Find & Replace' puts me back in the realm of manually editing one by one  ?
