Changing the root or path of my playlists/music
« on: July 07, 2018, 07:19:02 am »

Hiya people,

Although I am a Media centre 22 user, this question is still important for all versions, I think.
Here is the problem: I have had a MacMini for many years as my music server and have more than 1500 CD’s, HDtracks and recorded HD vinyl. It was all safely backuped on a external server and was used with playlist on my MacMini. I use a dac from Chord with USB to my Quad 99 stereo. Great sound. Fine player.

The whole HDD went however to small and exceeded the 2 Tb and I upgraded to a MacPro. I used Timemachine to get the stuff back on my new Mac but I also could have used the local made back up.

The path for a songs now is users/macmini/music/classical/bach/cantates/glenn gould for a, you quested it, Glenn Gould record.
But I want to get rid of the MACMINI name! I had to keep the Macmini name because of all the hard work I had making all these playlist. I was forced to use the old name. I much rather take a new clean install and get the music files on a different location, or at least name.

So my question is: can I keep all my playlists but change the path of these playlists into a new computer e.g. MacPro....?
So users/macpro/music/classical/bach/cantates/glenn gould

Could there be some kind of work-around? Some kind of trick? I really don’t want to make and edit all these playlists again. It took me over a year to get all the work done. All the filing, cover art and naming. Jeez, what a work:-)
I hope someone hase a good answer and thanks in advance!

MC has a find and replace tool.

Please forgive my ignorance but could you elaborate on that? I tried to find information bit was not very succesfull.
Remember, all the links for all the playlists have to be adjusted.

Thanks!
Lots of interesting stuff. I am trying to find my answer. Maybe, I get back on it? In any case, thanks again.

Okay, I do have a question still. Migrating 2.3 Tb of audiofiles will take some time so I ask in advance.
Suppose I would reinstall my mac (or create a new account for that matter) with the name MAC. Then I install JRiver 22. I reinstate the backup. I move all the audiofiles back into the same postion (e.g. users/MAC/music/
So all links to the files are bad now. Also the playlists do not work. Because MC is looking for the user MACMINI, right?
Is it possible to use the library tools and ‘tell’ Mediacenter in one action where all the files are? And are the playlists then also reinstated?
That is my question.

Again, I would love to try it out but we are talking about thousands of files.... putting a back-up back takes more than 6 hours.

Hope for an answer!

Have a great day

You're going to have to experiment a little.

There is a Find and Replace tool.

The wiki has a topic on Moving Files.

What you want is the Rename, Move, and Copy Files Tool.  Tools > Library Tools > Rename, Move, and Copy Files

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files

If you manually move all of your music, you can then update JRiver's database using the UPDATE option of this tool.

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files#Modes

You'll want to use the Find and Replace template located near the bottom of the tool.

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Rename,_Move,_and_Copy_Files#Find_.26_Replace

Read carefully.  Try an experiment with one file.  Then an album.  Or a whole playlist.  Once you know it's working as expected, you can do everything that's left.

Be careful.  This is the kind of thing that can really mess up your library and/or your files on disk if you do the wrong thing.

Good luck!

Brian.

Two more things:

While you're doing this, you should probably turn off Auto Import altogether.

Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Run auto import in background > (uncheck)

Just to be safe, I would also disable "fix broken links":

Tools > Options > Libraries & Folders > Configure auto import > tasks > Fix Broken Links > (No)
