MC9 crashes when downloading MP3 encoder

I see that the Ogg encoder is the default. I want to use the VBR MP3 (looks like it's actually LAME) encoder. When it downloads and attempts to install, the program crashes. I am running Win XP Pro SP1. I seem to be able to select that option now in the encoding properties but I am curious what caused the crash.
