Playing Blu-ray Pure Audio discs through MC24.
« on: September 14, 2018, 08:10:52 am »

I have a handful of Pure Audio discs, which when I listen to them from my normal Blu-ray player they only output at 16/48 instead of 24/96 via the coax digital output to my DAC (Chord Qutest).  If I got an external Blu-ray burner/drive with a USB output could I play it with MC24 on my PC and achieve the higher resolution of the disc through the USB input of my DAC?  Hope that makes sense!

I think you are running into a specification of Blu-ray players where HD Audio over non copy protected outputs (Coax, Optical) is downsampled.  HDMI would not have this limitation.

Your best bet is rip the audio disc to your computer (MakeMKV comes to mind), and use MC to play to your DAC over USB.  Assuming no DAC or ASIO driver limitations, you should have the full audio.  Even better now is that MC will playback that folder rip with full menus and all the extras you are likely to have on the disc.  I have several like this.

Don't know if you would have some limitation from an external BD drive.

Thanks for that, I'll have a go and report back on findings when I have a Blu-ray drive.

Note that MC itself can only play decrypted Blu-ray discs. You would have to get a separate utility to do the decryption, like AnyDVD HD. Check the wiki at https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Blu-ray for full details.

Thanks for the additional info Hendrik - are you saying that MakeMKV doesn't do the decryption, and AnyDVD HD does?

Ripping it with MakeMKV would be fine as well, it will also do decryption. The above only applies if you insert a physical disc and want to play it directly with MC.
