New Yamaha A1070 AVR - bitstreaming, DSD, SACD iso question
« on: August 29, 2018, 07:36:26 am »

I've been using JRiver since v17 but want to optimally configure my new AVR properly using HDMI from my Ryzen 2400G HTPC. My primary issue is with SACD iso... Is PCM ok or should my new Yammy Advantage AVR be doing more? I can't seem find the right JRiver combo settings for bitstreaming and DSD.

How are you connecting the Yamaha? USB? If so, try enabling DSD bitstreaming for the Yamaha audio device selected in MC's options. Are you attempting DSD over DLNA (DoPE)? Try enabling the DSD bitstream option under DLNA servers.

If you're using HDMI, DSD over HDMI from a computer isn't possible and your only option is to convert DSD on-the-fly to PCM, which MC should already do by default if DSD bitstreaming is disabled.

I am pretty sure the A-1070 does not support a PC connection on its usb, only disk drives. From usb connected disk drives it does support 2.8MHz and 5.6Mhz DSD. So, the only possibility for playing DSD from MC without converting to PCM would be through DLNA and DoPE. I do not know if DSD is supported in that mode on this receiver.   It does support DSD over HDMI from a SACD player, but as Awesome says, the PC drivers do not support DSD over HDMI.  So I think DSD over DLNA is the only hope.

Yes but how?  No doubt it will do it from an SACD player.

Have any Yamaha AVR owners figured out how to optimize their JRiver and Yammy Advantage DSD settings  ?

From my small amount of research, I don't think you can directly. It looks like it only supports DSD from a USB connected disk drive as dtc mentioned above, along with a SACD player connected via HDMI. Nothing I've seen reading the owner's manual suggests it supports DSD over DLNA (DoPE) which would be the only way to get DSD working from a PC running JRiver Media Center to the Yamaha receiver. And it certainly doesn't look like it supports a PC connection from USB, again, as dtc mentioned above.

I suggest contacting Yamaha support if I were you, to see exactly what your options are when it comes to DSD playback.

I remember asking Yamaha these same questions at a CEDIA years ago.  No one knew but they tried to get a factory expert on the phone for me.  He was no more useful.
