I have had no trouble extracting the stereo DSF files but want to be sure I understand the extraction process to 5.1 DSF.  Is it simply a matter of setting the channels in the Convert dialog or are there other subtleties involved?

Just keep in mind if you're using MC to extract/convert DFF or DSF files (like from a SACD ISO) via file conversion in MC, it's going through a PCM conversion stage, e.g. DSD (DFF/DSF/SACD ISO) to PCM to DSD (DFF/DSF) which isn't a lossless conversion (DSD to PCM or vice versa can't be a lossless conversion).

I'd recommend using sacd_extract for this: https://github.com/sacd-ripper/sacd-ripper

It can extract DFF or DSF files from a SACD ISO without doing any conversion (hence no conversion to PCM in the middle).

This *should* extract multichannel DSF files from a SACD ISO (don't have time to double check and test it):

And this for stereo tracks (again, don't have time to double check and test it):

sacd_extract has a java based gui as well.   

it is from sonore.   it is pretty good and also useful to dump a sacd to iso from a player with the appropriate mediatek chipset.

That's cool. What kind of optical drive is needed for to create the SACD ISO file? Will a standard BD-ROM drive be able to read the sacd? Or does one need an Oppo 105 to make the ISO?

EDIT: Never mind. I think I got the answer - you need the 105, certain Pioneer players or the venerable old model PS3 with right firmware.

In addition there's no CD/DVD/BD drive that can read a SACD on a PC so it can't be ripped there. Though I do recall that I heard about somebody working on some form of a SACD drive for a PC, but not sure if that ever went anywhere.

yup.  i have an Oppo BDP-105 and I bought a Pioneer Elite BDP-180 as a backup.  Both have that Mediatek chipset that allows this.

It's very similar to how folks backup their UHDs using certain BDXL drives with an appropriate firmware.  these drives are referred to as "UHD Friendly" as they are not official UHD PC drives, which don't work across all the software options available to backup UHD.  Someone actually made a business out of flashing drives and re-selling them for UHD backup.

The software from Sonore lets you extract to DSF, if you want, where you can then tag the files as you would MP3.  For that I use kid3 since it does a nice job of downloading all the appropriate metadata and artwork.

Yes, there was active talk of that - a USB connected box pluggable into a PC and containing a recycled PS3 SACD  drive - when only the PS3 could rip SACDs.  But, I think the idea is quite dead for now, ever since the ripping solution via certain Oppo, Pioneer, Sony, etc. players became available.
