Is there a way to delete orphan jpg files in the folders?
I usually keep the jpg in the same folder as the file but deleting the movie leaves all the jpg behind

I think that is useful, especially if you have each video file or movie in its own folder with extras e.g. posters, photos, subtitle files. I myself assign/tag each movie as an 'album' because I have a lot of movies copied directly from multiple DVDs. When you try to delete a file(s), there is an option box displayed with three choices... a fourth option might be to delete the containing folder and all of its contents -- maybe with additional safeguards like second confirmation. And, say, if there are multiple subfolders, a third confirmation to delete all the subfolders as well.

You could press Ctrl+Shift+Delete to have the fourth option highlighted for you in advance... or some other key combination.

If you have any additional assets (other than the thumbnail/sidecar) associated with the movie or video file(s), it is generally neater to organize and separate said video files inside their own folders. Although, frankly, I don't necessarily keep ALL video files in their own separate folders e.g. a single season of a TV series.

So here's an example: under the folder movie_title_(year)_[format], I may store six or more files besides the main movie title file:

movie_name.mkv
trailer.mkv
director_interview.mkv
actor&actresses_interview.mkv
additional_featurette.mkv
movie_poster.jpg
external_subtitle.srt
text_file_of_saved_personal_notes&other_other_notable_reviews.txt (this you can transfer and save in the file's actual metadata for later).

As far as I know, the only way to reliably delete/move the movie and all of its extraneous assets contained in this folder is to import ALL files into JRiver (not just videos) and thereafter tagging them within a singular group field like 'album'. Of course, you'd have to create a custom library view to display the non-video files too. Importing everything obviously looks like a mess with all the extra files, so what I usually do is stack all the files into a single collapsible row entry (see attached image for example). This takes a lot of silly work. If I don't do this, whenever I delete or move an album or movie, a lot of the other files (unimported in JRiver) get left behind/are lost which just creates more of mess that I'd have to inevitably later fix with my windows file manager.

*This technique with stacking may not work when deleting in Theatre view mode though -- actually after testing: nope, actually does not work well as you can only delete SINGLE files in that viewing mode. You'd have to manually enable your movies section in the theatre view mode to show jpeg files too, which would be quite messy to look at, not to mention delete each asset separately from the main title. Waste of time.

is it to difficult to just delete the movie and associated files through windows, I mean ya know yer gonna delete the movie so just go to windows and git rid of all the stuff ya don't need.

That's definitely a simple solution. But it's a bit of a guessing game when half of your media have extra assets and the other half don't. Every time you move or delete something, you'd have to double check in explorer to see if there are any leftovers. Argh. I would prefer to avoid having to jump in & out of JRiver altogether just to see the actual contents of a folder a movie resides in.

*Actually, you can avoid using windows explorer by right clicking on a file and choosing 'locate' > On Disk (inside Media Center). I find it's much faster this way. However, it's still an extra step though having to always double check by navigating away from the current library view. It would be so much more preferable if clicking on the 'locate' button would OPEN a NEW TAB instead of JRiver navigating away from the current library, as is its default behaviour right now.

I don't know...I just right clicked inside MC choose on disk (external) it opened a new windows explorer....maybe we have different versions....

Nah, I just prefer to stay inside the JRiver environment -- tabs and and everything. I don't want to have to see the ugly windows explorer ever. It's especially glaring if you have a nice skin and themes going on in JRiver, but then still have leave every so often just to do some minor maintenance work out of the program.

I put all my movies into their own folder, named in the format "Movie_name (Year)". It is easy to move a whole bunch of movies to their own directory at once using the RM&CF function.

When a movie is in its own directory, the deletion process removes the Movie, Sidecar, and Cover Art (jpg) file at the same time, plus any subtitle srt file that is named exactly the same as the movie file, with just a different extension.

In fact, I just tested with two movies in the one folder, including their Cover Art and Sidecar files, and deleting the movie also deleted the extra files.

I confirmed this on a standalone installation of MC, not using a MC Client.

This works whether the deletion is done in Standard or Theatre View.

I don't know of a setting that would make MC work differently for you Maid. I do know that sometimes ancillary files can get left behind, or empty movie folders, but I don't know under what specific circumstances that happens. I just clean up the directories occasionally.

Maybe some careful searching of the Wiki and Forum would highlight something. Particularly in the discussions about "View Extras".

I have gone to the trouble of putting all movies etc in their own folders.
If I delete a movie the folder with its data and picture is deleted.
If I delete the last episode of a tv show it leaves the folder behind.
What if anything is the difference here ?

Well, that is a little progress. In your first post even movie deletions didn't delete the folder.jpg file!

When I delete the last episode in a TV folder, MC asks if I want to delete the empty folder. Assuming, of course, that there aren't any other files in there and hence it is actually empty. Usually, that is the case for me.

Maybe you have hidden that message in the past, so it no longer shows. If that is the case, try resetting the messages in MC, "Options > General > Advanced > Reset all confirmation messages". I think MC remembers the last answer to a message if you then hide future messages, so if you said No to deletion and then hid the message, MC would keep applying that answer. I haven't tested that though. I tend to keep all messages active and answer each time.

lol, I tried what you suggested and if I allow the movie tv picture it is a screen shot.

This is ok in theater view but not in standard view

I have let jriver put the screen grab for episodes in the folder but what to do when there is no image.
If I download one it appears that the folder will not delete as the jpg stays there

Hi again Maid.

I haven't read through all the one-sided conversation because it is a little confusing. Could you summarise in one post what you have learned, what you have done, and where you are up to? Thanks.

A quick browse and the only suggestion I have is to check that the Episode Cover art images aren't being imported into MC, and hence separate records on their own, and won't be deleted. Just check that images aren't being imported for your TV Show path.

Ctrl+Click opens the locate view in a new tab.

Hi Again.
All has been explained by Hendick.
As you know previously I was asking why my folders and jpg were not being deleted for TV.
I discovered that was because I was downloading one JPG for all my episodes and not using the image from TheTVDB for all episodes.
Now to properly housekeep I am using the image from TheTVDB like JPG you showed me, now it works as it should.
The only thing is when there is no picture how do you fix that? and these images from TVDB do not really depict the show (not nice looking)

Well, Hendrik might have misunderstood the question I think, as I noted in that other thread.

But you are on the right track now I think. If you use the "Get Movie & TV Info" function to download metadata including images from TheTVDB, then MC knows that the image in the folder next to the episode is Cover Art for the episode, and so will delete it along with the video file when you delete the episode using MC. MC will also ask if you want to delete the sub-directory if it is now empty, at least for me using this process. Same with movies as noted above.

If you had been downloading images manually and then assigning them to the episode using one of the Cover Art functions, or even just renaming them to match the episode name, then MC probably isn't in control of the image. It won't delete the image because it didn't place it in the directory.

The key is to do everything inside MC, using MC functions, and then it all works as expected.

If you really do need to download an image for a movie or TV episode because there is no image available to MC via the "Get Movie & TV Info" function, download it to a location that MC doesn't watch for Auto Import, rather than to the sub-directory the video file is located. Then select the episode in MC, use the "right-click > Cover Art > Add from file" function, navigate to where you put the image and select it, and allow MC to copy the file where it wants to when it asks. MC will then put a renamed copy of the image into the sub-directory next to the video file. At that stage you could delete the original image you downloaded, if you wished, as it is no longer required.

I find the images from TheTVDB are adequate. I can usually tell that they belong to the correct Series, which is enough for me. At least they mostly don't have TV logos on them, and aren't for a TV program that was playing during the padding of a recording, for example. Sure, they are mostly a frame from the episode, but they have been selected intelligently by someone most of the time, or they are a PR image. I really don't worry about that at the episode level.

No, you don't need to do anything for any episodes, except run the "Get Movie & TV Info" function.

If that doesn't provide an image, or you don't like an image, find your own and use the "Add from file" function. You don't have to do anything with the extension. You don't have to do anything with the file name either. Just follow my instructions for an episode and see what it does. Yes, that function works one at a time. MC renames the image file correctly and copies it if you answer "Yes" to the question asked.

If that is what you want to do. I don't think you said that earlier.

That means you are going to have the Series Cover Art on every Episode. You are just making work for yourself, really. I find the standard functionality with Series, Season, and Episode Cover Art works just fine.

I dont like the episode picture that tvdb provides . it doesnt look nice in theater view
