JRiver Media Center handles TV Series recordings very, very well.
It can record all Episodes of a Series, or just Episodes not marked as Repeats, or just Episodes that it hasn't recorded before... or all Episodes in Season x or above, or below, or perhaps above Season x and also Season 1, or... it is rules-based, and it can be used in as many ways as you can think of, if your EPG data has the necessary information.
Lots of people use a HDHomeRun Prime with MC.
