JRiver Media Center : Fault/ annoyance
« on: November 29, 2018, 02:04:55 am »

Fault in all Builds Since 24.0.52

I have a problem that has not changed since  build 52 (64Bit),I have monitored every release since build 52 to build 60,
and I have mentioned this before/and no one bothered to reply.

The problem is that all builds after Build 52 /when I open JRiver Media Center the screen blurs momentarily,I understand
that this may be considered insignificant,although it is not correct for this to happen/and I find it somewhat annoying.

Is it possible anyone else has noticed this,I posted this in another part of this forum and it was suggested by JimH

That it could be a video driver(latest driver is installed) I am at this time I am using Version 52 64 bit as this error does not occur there
It was also suggested that it could be antivirus/I use windows defender,it causes no problem with version 52,I believe it is a problem
that is just carried on with each version up to latest version 60.

Please correct me if you do not think I am correct,or if you have experienced this please comment/and if you have a suggestion please elaborate.
Thank you

This happens on my windows 10 installation too. If I click too early then mc crashes.
I use my pc less since I bought Idpi, so it is less of an annoyance for me.

Does the windows task bar disappear when the screen 'blurs'? The MC screen 'expanding' to fill the gap where the task bar was resulting in the 'blur'?

If so, this is a long standing issue that's been discussed a number of times across a few versions of MC. I don't see it as often as I once did, so the situation is better. Funnily enough I saw it yesterday (first time in a while) when I first ran the  MC benchmark (it didn't re-occur on subsequent runs of the benchmark).

I think it's due to a 'choked' thread/process in MC. It seems to happen when MC is performing a (background?) task and something gets 'held up' until the thread or lock is released. During the 'hold up' MC goes into a kind of 'not responding' state (the screen goes pale and blurred). The disappearing task bar is particularly odd as this is the only application I've ever seen do that and I've have experience of 1000s of windows apps since the 1990s. But then again MC is the worst app I've seen for having weird conflicts with anti-virus apps. As I write this I wonder if the two are connected in some way and something at the heart of MC doesn't work 'efficiently' or 'cleanly' with the OS.

In your case it could be down to a 'spike' in load as MC starts. Maybe a slow disk (try a SSD) or a complex calculated custom field that just delays the loading of the current view a fraction. Of course there's the ubiquitous 'anti-virus?' response; but in all seriousness you do have to exclude MC and its processes from AV for the most reliable/glitch free operation; just don't ask me why  :)

Yeah, I've seen this too, but it goes by so quickly that it just lasts a fraction of a second before MC fully opens (since I'm using a M.2 SSD, it goes by quick - I assume if you're still using a hard drive for your Windows OS, it'd probably linger longer). Anyways, I believe this is related to the new support for the "glass" transparency/blur effect being added back to MC24 for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 in build 24.0.53 along with how the way MC handles window drawing. So it might be considered "normal" however it crashing surely isn't normal.

If you're not actually using a skin which enables that, it won't have any influence on drawing.

Yep, you're right. It's only the skins with transparency/glass enabled where this happens.

Glass support on Windows 8.1/10 is mostly undocumented and experimental. If you're using such a skin, thats basically what you get. If that effect annoys you more then you want the glass effect, then I would recommend to use another one. :)

Thanks for all the feedback
Good to see I am not alone in noticing this issue,and just in case it is caused by the (new support for the "glass" transparency/blur effect being added back to MC24)
suggested by Awesome Donkey.

 Is it possible to disable the "glass" transparency/blur effect" with in the skin ( i like to use Black on Black),or have a disable check box in options

Anyway thank you to all,for the really good feed back/and suggestions

Cheers

You can make a copy of the skin's folder, rename it to something else like Black on Black (no Glass) then open up the main.xml file inside that folder and change the skins name to Black on Black (no Glass) and then find this part...

Code: [Select]
  <GLASS>
    <Data Enabled="1" />
  </GLASS>

And switch the 1 to a 0 to disable it and save it. Then switch to that 'new' skin in MC, and the glass effect should be disabled for it.

EDIT: Here's a pre-modified Black on Black (no Glass) skin for you to use. Just go into MC's installation directory > Skins > Standard View and extract this .zip file there: http://www.mediafire.com/file/mm6l6przo5tp586/Black_on_Black_%2528no_Glass%2529.zip/file

I didn't even know Black on Black used the Glass effect. Its really quite subtle.
Anyhow I suppose I can add a setting somewhere to actually disable Glass for a Skin.

Ok thank you Hendrik,

I found another Black skin that is not enabling the glass effect/and yes no blurring.I would still like to use Black on Black.

and wonder if the glass effect could not be disabled with the addition of a check box in options.

Anyway your suggestion is good for now / thank you for that

Wow! that is what I call cooperation,if you could do that you make this guy very happy and I expect a lot of others who do not like that effect.

This is the kind of thing that makes JRiver Media Center the Greatest,I upgrade every year and have been doing that for years,
And the reason is, to me it is the best and most comprehensive Audio player I have ever used/and I have tried them all

A big Thank you

No problem. :)

I didn't know Black on Black used glass either so I was kinda surprised. But I just checked to make sure, there's three skins that come with MC24 that use glass;

Black on Black
Noire Glass
Pearl Bailey

In the case of Pearl Bailey though, it's actually set to disabled in main.xml and I'm not sure why. Perhaps this is a bug or something? Or perhaps it has issues with glass enabled? I'm kinda curious now.

EDIT: Maybe I see why it's disabled for Pearl Bailey. I just enabled it and tested it and it seems to work fine... however, I noticed the red/play button sometimes glitches so that's probably why it's disabled by default.

Hi Hendrik,
Even though the Awesome Donkey solved my problem/I think if it was not too much trouble the setting to disable glass on a skin could be useful

for others.I guess you make that decision,as you are the one who has to do the work.

Anyway thank you for your help

There is no functional difference between not including the setting or including it with 0. It may have been based on another skin that had it enabled and the setting just removed. For all intents and purposes, it does not use it.

I don't use any skin; just the mc out-of-the-box version.  So it's probably an antivirus thing.

Any ideas what the cause of the occasional 'blurring' is when it's not triggered at start up and therefore not related to the Glass setting in the Skin?

It'll do the blur thing too if you restore a minimized window when using a glass-enabled skin.

Yeah, the Program Files directory is protected so you'll have to copy it to the desktop, edit it from there, then put it back.

If you're going to edit the original skin (without making a copy of the skin and adding (no Glass) to the end) I'd recommend making a copy/fork of the skin, since updates will override any changes you make to the original skins. Hence why it's better to fork the skin, edit that, and use that skin. Again, just copy the skin's folder you want to edit to the desktop, then edit the skin (the folder name, the skin name and the glass setting in main.xml) then copy/paste the folder back into the Standard View directory the skins are located in.

It'll do the blur thing too if you restore a minimized window when using a glass-enabled skin.

I don't use a glass enabled skin ( Black And Blue Too (SB) ). I think my (occasional and long-standing 'blur') is a different blur altogether unless your task bar disappears too. . . I've had mine from at least MC23 (maybe even 22).
