MC 24 General Question regarding development
« on: October 26, 2018, 06:12:35 am »

Hi,

A friend recommended JRiver MC. He's using Windows, but all I have is Ubuntu. I am trying it out, but it seems buggy. I'm not complaining about that as it seems development is still active for MC on Linux. I was using Media Monkey on Windows and was very happy with it for file organization. I've tried Clementine for Linux and it's OK, but doesn't seem to have the number of features MC has.

I am debating whether to buy a license for MC, but I'm hesitant as I don't know at what rate bugs are being fixed. I've spent enough of my time frustrated with programs in the past and Windows in general that I just don't want to get into reporting a bunch of bugs and searching for reported bugs in MC unless it's going to be worth my time. If I report a bug and it doesn't get fixed for a year, I'm moving on.

So, questions:
1. How active is bug fixing and development for the Linux port?
2. Anyone other users investing time in MC and finding it worth reporting bugs and reported bugs are getting fixed?

Sincerely,
Jaded

What bugs/issues are you encountering, exactly? Usually bugs and other issues don't get fixed unless they're reported.

That said, MC for Linux does have quirks that are known, and they are slowly are being addressed (as the devs are working towards parity between MC versions on different OSes... except probably the television stuff, which is likely Windows-only). So listing issues would be a good thing to figure out if the issue(s) you're encountering are known or not. There used to be a bugs/issues list topic for MC for Linux a couple versions ago, but I'm not finding that list currently. Plus it's probably outdated now. :)

Thanks for the quick response. Just FYI, I hate reporting issues because I hate feeling like a complainer
version 24.0.55.
Using Standard View. I don't know and was unable to determine the names of all the panes, but I'll do my best.
These may be known issues. I wish I knew the list of known issues as I hate spending time reporting things that are already known. I know I can search the forum for these issues, but the forum is probably not showing known issues discovered by the developers.

1. Right click on an audio file->Send To->Drives & Devices shows n/a. I have my android connected via USB File Transfer. I expected the android to show up.
2. In the tree view pane, holding down the down arrow key to scroll and then releasing the key does not stop the scrolling. MC continues to handle all the key repeats. When it stops scrolling, clicking on a top toolbar menu title, e.g., View, the menu list is very slow to be displayed. I saw that the key repeat issue was reported as fixed in an earlier build, but it doesn't seem fixed, or the bug came back. Or maybe it was only fixed in a narrow scope.
3. Select an album from the tree view. The album name is shown in the tab of the main view/queue?
    a. Initially, the full path of the file is not shown and I cannot scroll to the right enough to see the full path name. Auto size all columns fixes this. I would find it better for auto size to be a default action if the default view has not been set (I don't yet know if MC saves view parameters).
    b. Hovering the cursor over the tab containing the album name brings up the context menu. This behavior, hovering for menu, is inconsistent with other menus. Out of habit, I right click to bring up context menu. However, this tab requires a left click to show the context menu. On right click, it shows "Execute: 'tab title'", 'tab title' being the actual item name. Clicking on "Execute: 'tab title'" shows the context menu. This is weird. But, I guess all bugs are weird.
