Anyone know what's going on here?
« on: May 27, 2003, 05:26:35 pm »

I've got 150 audio files in mp3 format at a 32 bitrate which I'm trying to transfer to my JB3.
About half of them transfer OK but the other half won't budge. The piece of paper is flying between the folders but nothing moves.
I tried the same files with Creative Play Centre and it says they are in a format it doesn't recognise.
I can't tell any difference between the files that transfer and those that don't. They all have the .mp3 extension, are roughly the same length and play in any mp3 player.
I'm using all the lastest drivers.

Anyone got a clue for me?

Cheers.

I just don't don't get it.

I've run the files through MP3 Utility, Tag Studio and MP3 Library and none of them can find anything wrong them except for 1 out of 80 files.

Aren't there any audio gurus out there?

Does the JB3 officially support files at that low of a bitrate?

I would compare a file that will transfer to one that won't. Look and see if there are differences in the sample rate, stereo/mono, etc.

King,

Out of the 150+ files, I have 75 on my JB that work fine. I've compared files that transferred with files that won't and as far as I can see the only difference is in the size of the tag and where the first frame starts. I thought I was on to something when I noticed that all the good files tags were in 2000 range and the dodgy ones were around the 600 range. Then I came across a 'good' file that had a tag size of 312 so it was back to the drawing board!
Good and bad have the same sample rate and are all mono.
I'm going to keep looking but I reckon it's got me beat.

Cheers.

Sorted.

Took some advice from the Creative newsgroup and used EncSpot to find which files were encoded with what.
Turns out all the bad ones were encoded with FhG (fastenc or mp3enc) and all the good ones weren't.
I just converted one of the bad ones to WAV and then back to mp3 via Lame and it transferred.

I'm so happy.

Cheers.

interesting, never heard of that one before

FhG was a defacto standard, maybe it depends on the encoder version.

I don't know any of the technical stuff regarding this, but I believe that there are differences in the way LAME and Fhg write the file "headers"...or it's possible that Fhg doesn't write the headers at all. You might try running the files thru VBRfix to see if that fixes them. Then you won't have to reencode.

Too late rocketsauce, I've already reencoded them and they are all now on the JB.
Wouldn't something called VBRfix be for VBR's? I don't know the program but all my files were constant bitrate.
Academic now anyway.

Cheers.

It can be used to fix the headers on any MP3s, I believe.
