Minimum RAM for PC or Mac

Hi folks
I am just about to start using JRiver and I was wondering what size RAM would be suggested?

My son has a one year old PC laptop with 4GB that I could use to rip CD's to external drives, and then control, manage and playback the externally stored audio.

The other option is to buy a used Mac Book Pro to do the same job.

Either option will be dedicated to this task and will only act as a ripping and management/control surface for JRiver.....I just need to find out what size RAM I should be using?

If the computer can run a web browser to look at web sites and do that without choking or slowing down massively or anything like that, then it should be able to run MC with no problems either.  MC doesn't require much memory.  It will ask for more memory if you use memory playback, but we are only talking about an extra GB or two.
