WASAPI exclusive mode does not work (Realtek sound)
« on: January 19, 2019, 03:17:06 am »

After a couple of years of no longer using MC I decided to purchase the newest version and listen to some of my original non-streamed stuff.

I am not 100% sure that the previous version worked with my current hardware (PC has been replaced) but this v24 definitely doesn't work properly in WASAPI exclusive mode... I get a bit of music but mostly static.

As a test to see if this is a JRiver problem I played though Cakewalk. It outputs just fine in this mode and I can verify that it is truly exclusive mode because attempts to play from other apps at the same time fail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What are you trying to play?  File types?

Any DSP set?

WASAPI is usually problem free.

Try Direct Sound as a test.

No DSP. I didn't test anything else, like I said another app outputs properly to WASAPI.

What I have found is that uninstalling the Realtek driver (2.82) and using the MS Win10 native driver then WASAPI exclusive mode works :) I'm fine with this but it does suggest a JRiver implementation problem.

Just tried this with one of my boxes that has Realtek onboard audio... and WASAPI exclusive works fine there.

Does the other application have Exclusive mode set?  If so, only that one will play.

I would suspect a driver issue more. The driver version is tied to the motherboard, so the version number doesn't mean much. Mine is up to 10.something. Try updating to the latest motherboard audio drivers, if you want the extra functionality of the Realtek driver. But then, audio in Windows 10 has changed a lot, so if the driver hasn't been updated, and you are happy with the Windows 10 native driver, stick to that.

You can just get Realtek drivers straight from Realtek, you are not stuck with whatever your motherboard vendor bothers to give you.
The latest can be found here:
https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/pc-audio-codecs-high-definition-audio-codecs-software (note: their website and downloads are sometimes a bit slow)

2.82 seems to be the latest, which seems to be what the OP had.

Built in W10 driver seems fine. I have no problem using that.
