"Internal Volume applies volume inside the 64bit JRiver audio
engine. This is the highest quality possible software volume. More on
64bit processing here Audio Bitdepth."

Under 'Picking Between System Volume and Internal Volume',

"If the noise is unchanged when you turn up the volume:

Use 'Internal Volume' and leave the System Volume at 100%. This is
advantageous because you get a 64bit volume and also because it allows
Media Center to have as much signal headroom as possible, which is
especially important if you do processing (upsampling, room
correction, bass management, etc.)."

So far, so good...

I tried the 'Internal Volume' and 'System Volume' at 100% (I assume
the System Volume control is the slider on the main screen. I can find
no other).

When I set these conditions, exit and reenter MC24, the
'System Volume' slider has returned to 0%.

This is poor behavior for a setting said to said to provide the best
sound quality.

In addition, the slider is pathetic. It is hard to use - much too
small. Provide a setting, if 'Internal Volume' is chosen, to set the
percent of 'System Volume' to use, be it 50% or 100%. Let the user
decide what provides the highest quality sound for their system.

EDIT: Everyone needs help now and then...calling something pathetic that you don't understand is well just wrong!

System volume is the volume of your windows default driver - click the sound icon in the right side of the windows task bar and it will pop up. If you use System volume option in MC you are controlling that setting. But to get the best sound output you should make sure that the default windows device is set to 100% and in MC choose the internal volume option which you can control by using the slider on the main MC screen.

Also, learn to use (Research) all of the settings under "Options > Audio > Volume".

It sounds like you have Volume Protection turned on, which is fine, but you probably have the Startup Volume set to zero.

The Wiki was a little out of date on this, as "Startup Volume" had been moved, but the content was still correct. Now improved.

Make sure you have tools>options>audio>startup set to -1 if you want the slider to stay where you left it between sessions, as for the slider - don't try and slide it, just click anywhere on the line to reset the volume.

Thank you for all of the comments, most all anyway. There was a good deal of information that I can use.
Quite sorry to have offended anyone. Documentation is always difficult; I will endeavor to look more closely.

Use a WASAPI output device. Then Media Center can set the device volume to 100% on playback (this is the default behavior).
You can also set a startup volume, if you are using the internal volume control.
