Library/File transferring Help Needed
« on: May 18, 2003, 08:36:39 am »

I just got a new computer and I would like to move all my music and MediaCenter files to the new machine.  I have spent a lot of work getting lyrics, rating songs, and finding cover art and I am hoping that I can transfer all of this information from one machine to another.  I am considering doing a library back-up and restore it to the new computer but I am not sure if that is the right thing to do.  On my old computer the CD art was located at D:\My Pictures\CD Art\ while on the new computer they are located at C:\My Documents\My Pictures\CD Art\.  The music files were at D:\My Music\ while on the new computer they are at C:\My Documents\My Music\.  Since I am relatively new at using this product, I am looking for advice on what would be the easiest and least painful to migrate all the files, data, etc. from old to new.  I have approximately 3,000 songs so the thoughts of having to rekey or touch each of these files individually is not the happiest thought I have ever had.  Can anyone give me some suggestions?  Thanks in advance for your help.

You should be able to backup the library, copy the track files and backup over,  restore the library, then do a find and replace on filename.  You may get lots of complaints from MC about failing to update files but it should work anyway.

For the coverart, you should be able to copy it to the new directory, make sure it's set correctly in MC's File Naming & Location, then do a Quick Find in File / Cover Art Directory and it should pick them all up.

Try small batches to make sure this works for you.
