MC9 'Digital Secure' mode with Plextor drives
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:51:24 am »

I'd prefer to be able to dump Exact Audio Copy (aka "EAC") [http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/], but I'm not sure that would be a good idea.  MC9 has a "Digital Secure" mode, which is akin to that used by EAC.

However, EAC makes one very good point regarding certain drives like my own: They cache audio data, which means that simply re-reading during a rip, and comparing those two results, provides no benefit.  Since the data is cached, of course the two "reads" will be identical, however they may not be correct.  This problem can totally defeat the whole intent of 'Digital Secure' ripping methods.

EAC claims to have a way of forcing a re-read from the media (rather than just a re-read of the audio data cache).  Does MC9 do this, or is there some other reason it isn't a concern?

I think you're right about drives with large caches. MC's secure mode is running TOO fast with those drives. We've got a similar Plextor model here so I'll look into it.

My Plextor drive has AccuStream support (something like that) and, thus, Digital Secure is overkill (not needed)...I use Large Buffer mode and never, ever have any ripping problems.  My Plextor is an 'older' 12/10/32A.

If I wasn't paranoid (read: anal retentive), I would also report that I've "never, ever had problems ripping".  My thing is that I hate ripping CDs so much, I want to make totally sure it's right and 100% accurate.

When I ripped my ~200-CD collection, using mostly EAC, I noted lots of read errors, even with good hardware and CD-ROMs that were clean and looked perfectly fine.  All of the errors were correctable, given that multiple reads were performed.

In any ripping mode, I doubt I would have noticed any serious problems, even with these read errors.  It's just a preference of mine to help ensure that each track is copied accurately, and not just "good enough".

My drive (a W1610A) is newer, and I doubt (hope, at least) that Plextor's technology hasn't gotten worse, rather than better.  I found that 'digital secure' was definitely not overkill.

I'm the same way, W.  I was reluctant at first, but AccuStream is killer (from what I've experienced for the last 2+ years).  Once I was confident I could trust it, I was happy that the speed boost was a big plus too.

Not so sure? Then rip a wav file from each and compare in EAC. Find a cd that has given you errors and see if MC does the same. Again compare.

Not likely to find to many differences unless the cd was used as a frisbee for Fido...

That's a good idea, and I will try that.  Unless EAC misreports read errors, though, I know I will come across problem discs--even though ALL of my discs look pristine.

Everyone thinks you need to have really beaten discs to have read errors (the "frisbee" joke is even commonplace), but that's not what I've experienced.  I've noted the same issue with two supposedly highly-accurate drives (a Plextor W1610A and a Ricoh MP9120).

I think the issue isn't "are read errors common?", but "do the read errors which ARE common really matter?".  And they probably really don't (that's where "anal" comes in!).

I love the multiple WAV/check MD5 hash idea.  Obvious, but ingenious!  I'll happily report back...

It would be nice not only to be able to use MC9 for ripping and encoding, but to be confident enough about the quality to leave it at that.
It is time consuming to rip->encode->check in EncSpot->adjust in mp3GAIN->import->edit tags->etc

Could that be a software fix, or simply more visits to the head-shrinker?
