Sonos One Won't
« on: December 20, 2018, 04:44:04 pm »

Just got a Sonos One - its my first Sonos product.  I haven't been able to play anything from MC.  MC lists the Sonos in Playing Now as 'Sonos One Media Renderer'  but every attempt to play to it fails and gives this error:  There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA device.  Double-check your device, server and network settings.  I've been all through Options>Media Network without success.

My setup is a local windows 7 pro pc running MC 21.  This pc and the Sonos are on the same wifi network -at my workplace.  The library is on another windows 7 pro pc in a different town.  The pc's connect via the internet and I am able to play music files and movies from the library pc to the workplace pc.

The Sonos One will play internet streams from radio stations and pandora using the Sonos app running on either the workplace pc or an iPhone.

What am I overlooking?  A little help please.

Giving this a bump.

Is what I'm trying to do a bridge too far?

From the jriver wiki :

DLNA Terminology

1. DMS -- Digital Media Server -- where the media resides

2. DMP -- Digital Media Player -- where the media is played

3. DMR -- Digital Media Renderer -- where media is played, but with ability to respond to a controller

4. DMC -- Digital Media Controller -- software control of the renderer -- functions as a remote

What I'm trying to get my workplace pc do doesn't seem to fit any of the definitions.

What media format are you trying to push to the Sonos?

Try if it works pushing an MP3 file.

Also go into the MC DLNA server settings, and try setting it to “Always Convert” the audio to PCM L16 No Header.

EDIT: and if none of the above works, then right click on the Sonos in MC Playing Now, and try setting Ignore Transport Events, and/or Disable SetNext support..

Majority of my files are flac.  Various bit depth and sample rates.  Tried forcing conversion to mp3 - still get the same error.
Also tried pcm 16 bit - same error.  Unable to locate "No Header" in MC21.  Also unable to locate "PCM L16".
Also tried right clicking on either and then both Ignore Transport Events and Disable SetNext Support.
Does DLNA allow a pc to be a "go between" (office pc) or relay between a server (HTPC) and a rendered/player (Sonos)?

Just found that the office pc is able to control the sonos' volume and transport functions (play, pause, stop).

You are on MC21 right? I don’t work for JRiver but it might be worth you upgrading to MC25 since they have done a lot of work on UPNP / DLNA in those three or four years. I think they have a trial edition that you could test first..

Can you play a file from the local Win7 machine via DLNA to the Sonos machine?

Maybe stand up a local (temporary) library and try that, it will rule out the DLNA settings if it works and point to the remote file access.

Using the Sonos app I can play files stored on the local pc (my workplace pc).  Using MC local files will not play, I don't get any error messages, just nothing from MC.

Please download the DMRA from my sig, run it against the Sonos, and post the renderer report here.

Here's the report...Thanks for your help.

The report shows that the DMRA could successfully push the MP3 test track to the Sonos. You could also download the DMRA version with the full set of media test tracks, and test which other media formats will play.

As far as MC is concerned, I suggest setting the MC DLNA server to push audio in Original format. It should play WAV, FLAC and MP3 without problems.

(Note: the Sonos is one of the few renderers that I have seen that clearly does NOT support the L16 aka PCM No Header format. So for this lack, it earns the right to be named as a DLNA non compliant renderer..)

If the Sonos works with the DMRA test tracks, but not with MC, then you probably have a firewall or router problem that is blocking communications between MC and the Sonos.

I have some progress to report.  Changed DLNA Server config to 'original' and 'PCM 16 bit' and can now play files from the local library to the Sonos.  But still unable to play to Sonos from the remote library.  Still get 'There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA device.  Double-check your device, server, and network settings.'  I am still able to play to 'Player' from the remote library.  Haven't looked into router settings yet.  What are your thoughts?

I think there are some settings somewhere in MC that control whether audio is converted or not when pushing tracks between a server and a client instance of MC.

But anyway its seems rather odd that you are pushing from on instance of MC to another, and then pushing it again from the second instance to your Sonos. ?? Why not push directly from the first MC instance to the Sonos?

The first instance of MC is not on the same wifi as the sonos.  In fact, the first instance (my HTPC) is 10 miles away from the sonos.  The second instance of MC (workplace PC) is on the same wifi as the sonos.  Doesn't a 'pusher' or a 'controller' of a sonos have to be on the same LAN or wifi as the sonos?   I thought it did and that's the reason for the second push.

You are going to need to give more details of your setup. Which instance of MC has the media files, and which are you using as the Control Point? And what’s your LAN and WAN configuration, and what routers are you using?

Music files are on the HTPC, which runs the first instance of MC.  The router is a Netgear R6250.

The sonos and the workplace pc (where the second instance of MC is located) are on the same LAN, which uses a comcast provided gateway.

Networking is not one of my strengths.  Sending a pm.

Was a solution ever found to this? I'm experiencing the same thing and would love to find a way to get this to work.
