Bitstreaming question wrt to FLAC and ALAC

(1/1)

davidw55:
Hi

Running MC 25 Linux sending audio out via HDMI to a receiver.

My receiver supports FLAC and ALAC (and a few others) up to 192khz sampling.

I've noticed that no matter what I do, the receiver reports PCM is coming from MC.  I've enabled bitstreaming as an experiment.   I looking to see if MC, when acting only as a renderer, could just send the data to the receiver without change.

Now, another instance of MC is acting as the server, but I believe I've told that server to not convert or resample anything.

(I'm aware of the advice re:bitstreaming, that MC probably does a better job of handling DTS and Dolby Digital than the receiver)

IIRC, bitstreaming over HDMI isn't supported in Linux, I think Hendrik made a comment on this earlier.

Hendrik:
Since you mention FLAC and ALAC, it should also be noted that those formats cannot be bitstreamed at all, since the HDMI specification does not include such audio formats.

davidw55:
Ok so, over HDMI, MC users should expect to see only PCM.

Thank you.
