Videos do not display preview thumbnails
« on: April 04, 2019, 12:08:25 pm »

I installed Ubuntu 18.04.2 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux with Linux kernel version 5.0.6 64 bit and I am using a new XFX AMD Radeon VII GPU. I researched the Phoronix article to download the firmware files and I put them into /lib/firmware/amdgpu and I bought Tony George's Ubuntu Kernel Update Utility and licensed it to install the latest Linux kernel version. After I restarted, my AMD GPU was properly detected and it just works. I installed JRiver Media Center 24 and 25, but not at the same time and licensed both of them separately. I successfully imported my private media library, but under the Videos section, very few preview thumbnails showed up in either version. Most of my defined categories under the Video section show up empty with almost no preview thumbnails. I did use VLC to play my videos, movies and TV shows and each title plays just fine.

I also own a mid-2017 ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC gaming notebook PC and a mid-2018 Huawei Matebook X Pro Intel Ultrabook laptop and I recently installed Ubuntu 18.04.2 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux on each laptop along with JRiver Media Center 25 Master License 64 bit. I am using JRiver Media Center version 25.0.15 64 bit right now on my three Ubuntu powered PCs. For both laptops, my Videos section appears normal and I can see preview thumbnails for the same titles and play them within the software product. This is not the case for my mid-2017 AVA Direct gaming desktop PC and I do not know why.

How can I get useful technical information to this community to investigate why this technical issue exists and how to solve it?

Does the build missing thumbnails option (located in MC's Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails) help any?

That does not work. Each sub-category under the Videos pane says that there are no files and Media Center is asking me to add files for it to display thumbnail previews. I tried to rebuild my thumbnails and it didn't fix anything. I also deleted my media library database and re-imported it from scratch and I got the same problem.

I played random movies, TV shows and videos from this hard disk drive and everything plays fine using VLC. I also tested Media Center on my two laptops and the thumbnail previews show up under each sub-category under Videos and each title plays just fine. This is really odd.

Is there any way I can get you more technical information like logs?

I have multiple local and cloud backups of my data that I keep in my apartment or within my iDrive personal account. I decided to plug in my Transcend StoreJet H3 rugged hard disk drive and copy my videos folder back to my internal hard disk drive in my AVA Direct gaming desktop PC right now. It is possible that by overwriting the same data on the internal Western Digital Black 6TB desktop hard disk drive that this could solve my problem, but I will not know until the data is recopied and I re-import using Media Center again.

Let me be clear. JRiver Media Center 24 and 25 Master License do not display any files under my Videos pane for the different sub-categories that I defined as separate looks. So, most of my custom sub-folders under the Videos pane show nothing. Media Center said it found no files and it is displaying nothing. Yet, I navigated to different sub-folders in my videos folder on my WD Black 6TB desktop HDD and play random titles and I get no errors; videos play back fine. Media Center can't find them on my AVA Direct gaming desktop PC.

Hopefully, recopying and overwriting my videos folder on the WD Black 6TB desktop HDD is going to solve it and Media Center will find those files and display preview thumbnails normally. Time will tell.

I have never encountered this problem beforehand and I have switched between GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows 10 64 bit on the same three PCs multiple times in the past.

The data copied and overwrote the existing data. JRiver didn't find any video files after importing and rebuilding thumbnails.

When I use VLC to play a video, it plays fine. When I use JRiver to play the same video, it doesn't play. This is something that I just noticed. I'm out of ideas here.

The current linux build has a bug with importing videos that causes it to fail, and would also result in thumbnails failing to be generated during import. That should be resolved in the next build.

That must be the case on my AVA Direct gaming desktop PC with JRiver Media Center 25.0.15 64 bit.

I am using my mid-2018 Huawei Matebook X Pro laptop running Ubuntu 18.04.2 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux and my Videos pane shows my sub-categories along with preview thumbnails. I can play any video content using Media Center 25.0.15 64 bit or VLC on my Huawei laptop. I am going to test my mid-2017 ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC gaming notebook PC in a few minutes.

My mid-2017 ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC gaming notebook PC also runs Ubuntu 18.04.2 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux and JRiver Media Center 25.0.15 64 bit. It did import my private media library including my videos, but some preview thumbnails do not show up while others do. Playing random videos is wacky because Media Center usually plays it just fine, but the OSD menu on top does not work reliably and when I press the ESC button, Media Center crashes. I guess this new version of Media Center 25.0.15 64 bit is early and it is buggy. I will keep it up to date through Ubuntu's Software Updater feature in the future. Things should improve in terms of functionality and stability over time.

Does anyone know if this is fixed in the latest build version yet?

Well, Hendrik said above it'd be fixed in the next build and that was three months ago... so there's a good chance it's fixed now. I'd recommend trying 25.0.71 and seeing if it's indeed fixed. :)
