Transcoding 4K with HDR
« on: August 01, 2019, 07:26:30 am »

Hi there,

I am wondering how HDR is being handled when a video is being transcoded. Will this work?

Thanks

No, transcoding HDR is not yet supported. Sorry.

Thanks Hendrik!

When you say "not yet", could you please elaborate a bit on the technical side? Is that something that will eventually be available through LAV or madVR? Any ETA on such a functionality?  :)

I suppose the answer depends what you want out of transcoding HDR specifically.

Do you want it to stay HDR, in another format, so maybe that it works through DLNA with a HDR TV? (Hint: we don't currently transcode into any formats that can carry HDR properly)
Or turn into SDR so you can enjoy it on a mobile device etc with no troubles?

Hmm, fair point!
Although I imagine, HDR through DLNA being a valid use-case, in my case it would be the latter. I currently have an SDR projector and tonemap with madVR when at home, but when I am away from home it would be most probably watching videos on a mobile "SDR-device".

MC does not transcode  yet properly. This probably expains why uhd does not play well via DLNA and through Android tv  using MO4media.
Any hope on this ?
I recently purchased a Sony Xperia 1 that can play back 4k hdr. I will like to put it uhd capability to use.

I have LG OLED and yes you can play HDR content through MC. You must use RO HQ and tell madVR using advanced settings how to handle HDR content. If you have a HDR capable TV select the passthrough option. For LG OLED you have also to enable ULTRA Deep Colour. A good test video: Google for "Sony 4K HDR Camp".
