Need your help with global volume control on new Mac
« on: September 05, 2019, 12:43:11 pm »

Hey all:

Just changed laptops to a new mac...from an older mac.

I use a Logitech keyboard with volume up and down keys.  It was fidgety but I had it working on the old machine...now it's broke!

Oh yeah, to complicate things I have a USB DAC also...so volume keys don't work like non DAC systems I guess.

I can use the mouse of course to change volume in the UI.
I can use cmd;+ to increase volume (when MC is in focus)
I can use cmd;- to increase volume (when MC is in focus)

I attempted an edit to the resource.xml file (below).  It seems to have no affect.
<Entry Global="1" Param="0" Command="10018" Key="Ctrl;+"/>
<Entry Global="1" Param="0" Command="10019" Key="Ctrl;-"/>

Any help is appreciated.

New information which may make this simpler to solve.

I find that my escape key doesn't stop songs anymore.
The play/pause key launches itunes.

It seems that my keyboard configuration is just not recognized by MC.  I think I spent some time solving this back in the MC16 days but can't remember how I did that.

Thanks for any help.

OK, strangely enough it works after its initial native capability is exercised.

If I play my first song after startup, no multimedia keys work...unless i hit the play/pause button first.
    itunes launches that first time, but I kill it and all the multimedia keys now work.

Any smart people able to explain why it behaves that way?  I'm on MC24 BTW.

Thanks,

Global volume controls, via the Resource.xml, do not seem to be supported on MC for Mac.  I think they are supposed to work on windows, but I don't know for sure.

As for the media keys on your Logitech keyboard:

1.  MC is supposed to obey these if the media key mode is set. Take a look at:
tools > options > general > advanced > media key mode
I don't like media keys and I only have them on a couple of laptops which I don't use.  So I don't have much experience to guide you.

2.  It's odd that Play/Pause launches itunes.  Except that the Mac really likes itunes and lots of things seem to interface with it.  I just did 3 minutes of research and found that there are several workarounds for this, but none are particularly elegant.  I recommend you do a search on something like "mac stop play key from opening itunes" and read some of the articles you find.  You might want to do the disable that is recommended in several of them.  I have never tried any of this, so proceed with your own judgement.

Good luck.

Brian.
