Mass Embedded Image Remove?
« on: May 08, 2003, 06:29:06 pm »

Wondered if there was a way to do this in MC:

Can you scan your library for Embedded Images, extract them to your image directory (so that MC still grabs the image when the mp3 is played), and then remove the image from the file altogether?

Is there functionality like this, or similar to this already in MC?

On a side note, I am interested on people's opinions of embedding album art into the mp3.  It seems like an awful waste of space to save the same info over and over (such as the same album cover for 10 seperate songs) versus making a reference to one image file.   What are advantages or disadvantages of each method?  Any recommended software tools for dealing with embedded images?

I don't think MC can do exactly what you are describing, though it wouldn't surprise me if someone came along and said it could.

Interestingly, I once had all my images embedded.  I only rip CD's for my music, and after the rip, I scan the cover myself and store it in the album's directory.  I later found that these embedded images in my ape files would not survive most transcodings, so I changed the setting to "linked image" (or whatever).  MC was smart enough to update all my tracks to point to the original image I embedded.  (I had assumed the new setting would only take effect for newly imported files.)  I thought that was cool.

Well, it's all relative.  As for wasted space, just consider that you are storing a ~200K image into a ~5MB file.  It's not much relatively speaking.  Put another way, we are talking a 5.0 MB file vs. a 5.2 MB file.

On the other hand, if your library is in the order of many thousands, then sure, this might add up to too much wasted space overall.

Hi,

Simple enough.

1/ First make sure that you've set a location for your Cover Arts (Tools | Options | File Naming...)
2/ Select all the files from which you want to Remove Internal Covers.
3/ Goto the properties tab section Image (Alt+enter)
4/ Uncheck "Store Image inside files" box
5/ Then RMC | Library Tools | Update Tags (from library)

Et voila !

The cover arts will be extracted from your files and stored in the location you set in step 1. They will be named 'Artist - Album.jpg' The link will be saved in the database and your files will be a little smaller.

Want your images back in the files ?

Well, just "Check" the "Store image inside..." box after selecting your files and Update tags again.

I tried it with mp3, mpc and ape files. should also work with ogg.
Little advice : Although the tagging system in the release version of MC9 is quite reliable you better do this by little steps (few hundreds at a time). I tested this on a batch of 587 files without a glitch !

Hope this helps,

Christian
