Long Paths on windows
« on: October 06, 2019, 08:19:30 pm »

Hi,
I am new to JRiver, so please forgive any repetition.
I had a library loaded in MC (living in Melco N1A). I got the message that 300 files were not filed because of very long paths.
Any workaround?
TIA,
Petros

PS: This might be less naive a question, than meets the eye.
It has been a common problem, in the past, that windows paths were limited to 256 characters.
However in Windows 10 there is a setting in the registry that the user can activate and then long paths are enabled.
Microsoft claims - or at least this is my understanding- that, very often, existing software does not take advantage of this possibility by calling the ascii - instead of the wide char variety of a certain function. (Maybe this is relevant? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/fileapi/nf-fileapi-getlongpathnamea_
I would sincerely appreciate any help/resolution/workaround you might offer!

You can try Options > General > Advanced > Support extra long filenames

That will make MC remove the 260 character maximum it normally enforces.
