I'm doing the same thing!  I get an error when trying to play inside the player.  If I select webpage, it will play, but it plays through my onboard sound in my laptop and not my USB DAC.

Ok, what version of linux, what is your video card and X server?

MX Linux 18.x, integrated intel graphics 4600 on the motherboard - I'll confirm these when I get home later. 

What is X server?

Try this from a terminal:
grep driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep DRI

And post the results.
Also, does video on the linux machines hard drive work?

Oops I mispoke earlier.  Video for this machane:

I tried to play a video from the hard drive with a .mov extension. Crashes MC every time. Video will play fine with a different media player on the same machine.
