Redirect LFE to main speakers
« on: November 22, 2019, 02:05:09 pm »

Hi,

I have a 5.0 speakers system.
Someone can tell me how in JRiver to redirect LFE (.1) to L and R speakers ?

Regards.

You could output at 5.1 then use Parametric Equalizer to copy from the subwoofer to the L and R.

Hi Matt,

Do you have an example or tuto for that ?
No other way available ?

Problem could be for receiver if a 5.1 audio flow iss send to it (and no LFE connected)...

If I go with Eq:

Move sub to L
Move sub to R

or copy ?

Can you please give me the correct method ?

Thx

Here is how you do it in the DSP Studio.

Thanks !

Why JRSS mixing activated ? Why Subwoofer (output section) is in silent mode ? It's mandatory ?
Why -4 Db for all speakers before adding sub to L / R ?

Why not use your receiver to do it instead?  Trying to do multichannel levels and transformation in MC is really clunky and weird.  Receivers are designed to do this with very simple menu options that work.

Some of us do not use receivers.

I've no receiver.

JRiver --> WISA HUB (Axiim HQ) --> WISA speakers

If you choose not to use a receiver or other surround sound processor, that's fine.  My comment was intended for those that do have those processors or receivers and their convenient, easy to use speaker setup options.  Since the OP has clearly indicated his setup, I guess I have nothing more to say on the matter other than...

Best of luck with your setup Adhara!  :)

I accidently left JRSS mixing turned on for my screen shot. It should be set to "No upmixing or downmixing."

The subwoofer channel is meant to be increased by 10 dB. However, you can't increase levels digitally or you get clipping. The solution is to attenuate all other channels. You will have two channels reproducing the LFE. The formula for adding coherent sound channels is dB = 20 × log (n) with n being the number of channels. Two channels gives an answer of 6.02 dB. Combining the LFE channel with both the left and right gives an increase in level of 6.02 dB. You now need just 4 dB of gain on the LFE channel to make it correct. This is done by attenuating the other channels by 4 dB prior to routing the LFE to the mains.

Technically, the previous math also indicates that you would need to attenuate all channels before mixing in order to prevent clipping if the volume control goes above 88% (-6 db). You can add a first line to the Parametric Equalizer that attenuates all channels by 6 dB or you can go to Tools > Options > Audio > Volume and set the Maximum Volume to 88%.

Thanks mojave !

What about silent mode in subwoofer section (output format) ?

Adaptative volume & volume leveling have to be checked for HT use ?

Brian.
I'm a Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and StormAudio dealer. JRiver is far superior for multichannel levels and mixing (except for the StormAudio processors). If you set the Subwoofer to None, some will mix to L & R and some to L, C, R. The mix levels will also not be correct. You have no control whatsoever. Furthermore, most processors will clip the mix. Right now my StormAudio processor clips any bass managed audio when using the multichannel digital outs (AVB or AES) and the volume level is above -6 dB in the processor. All non-UHD capable OPPO players clipped the subwoofer signal on the analog outs when bass management was used regardless of output level.

The "very simple menu options" on a receiver do not work most of the time.

If you turn off JRSS, then silent mode isn't an option.

Great !

Adaptative volume & volume leveling have to be checked for HT use ?
I've 2 zones, one for HT (5.0 output) and 1 for music stereo.

In which case Adaptative volume & volume leveling are strongly recommanded ?

It's hard to understand exactly what you are saying.  I think this particular thing applies to only digital outputs (not inputs) on this particular device.  I believe your report.  Just saying I don't totally follow.

The "very simple menu options" on a receiver do not work most of the time.

I'm assuming this statement is about unusual configurations like 5.0?  Or about really specific instances where a lot of things line up like a really hot LFE channel, really hot L, R, no sub out, *and* the processor/receiver turned up to nearly 0 dB?

Because if you are just saying it doesn't work "most of the time" that seems hard to believe since there are so many receivers installed in so many home theaters around the world, seemingly with no complaints about bass management.

I'm certain you have a valid point to make and I would like to understand it.  Perhaps I should start another thread and ask you there.

Hi @mojave,

When mixing channels, why using "add" function instead of "move" ?
We could have: Move Sub to L + Move Sub to R

Thx

Not sure, but I think Move will *replace* what's on the channel already rather than adding to it. Could that be it?
