Auto-Import Crashing
« on: December 14, 2019, 10:01:02 am »

Auto-Import started crashing when my library reached over 500K songs.  It will not add any more.

Turn audio analysis off.

Both Import and AutoImport crash.  Machines wired and wireless, both to same source of files.  It'll read all the files present, say it's writing, gets to maybe 100 "written" out of 3000, 4000, 6000 (depending on the folder I've chosen to import) then crashes and nothing was actually written to the database.  I DO NOT have "analyze" turned on.  You want to talk about frustrating!  Like most of us, I have over 105,000 songs to import!!!

update and clarification.
Autoupdate works if set up and NOT execute "now."
Any attempt to initiate a *large number of files* import, whether "import single folder" or "autoimport"
Importing a folder with 1-50 files seems to do OK.  In some instances, up to 100 files did OK.
The part of failure appears to be when Media Center is writing to the database.

If it's crashing during import/auto-import, chances are you might have bad files, which causes MC to crash. You might want to try enabling logging, repeat the crash again, then look at the Previous Log.txt file and see what the last file it was trying to import is, then try moving that file out temporarily and see if MC continues to crash. If it does, repeat the logging steps until it stops.

As posted in the other thread on this issue I have this exact same problem.
I have it on both my Desktop PC and my HTPC

I have been a Media Center user over many versions of it.

I uninstalled MC26 and reinstalled MC25 and now MC25 crashes in exactly the same way!

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall, including things like registry cleaner and a manual delete of the JRiver folders in User data and C:\ drive

Reinstalled MC25 and it still crashes out on auto import.
It is the "Updating Thumbnails" part of update that is the part where it crashes and it varies as to whether it is after 1800-4000 files

I followed Awesome Donkey's advice and enabled logging and checked the file after several crashes and it is with completely different files each time. Sometimes audio, sometimes video, and the last file processed has been various audio formats .dff .aac and .flac

The advice to turn Audio Analysis off is not good! I want to analyse audio of new files.

I cannot understand why MC25 reinstall is now not working, after putting MC26 on to each PC (and then uninstalling it due to crashes)

Under Options > Tree & View, try setting Thumbnail priority to Low.

Make sure you have read and followed the thread on Windows Defender.

Thanks JimH.
The following, I hope, will be of use to others, as for other people to be affected, something has changed with either MC or Windows itself, in the last 24 hours, to cause this.

I am now ignoring MC26 (I have the MC26 licence) and just focussing on trying to get MC25 up and running again.
I re-configured Auto-Import and unchecked "Build Thumbnails" and "Analyse Audio"

This fixed the Crashes (So far at least) and auto-import worked correctly

I then re-enabled Analyse Audio and again all was well.

I then re-enabled Build Thumbnails and the crashes recurred

I followed your suggestion and set Thumbnail creation threading to "Low" and then manually clicked build missing thumbnails and it went through over 44000 files successfully.

My concern is what has caused this change?
Is it a coincidence that I installed MC26 and this then prevents MC25 from working even on reinstalling it?
Did the MC26 install make any changes to Windows Defender exclusions?

I am just looking at the Windows Defender thread, but why would this only become relevant to me two days ago, which is when I installed MC26

(Coincidental possibly, but on the day I installed MC26, the only other change to my PC was  a Microsoft Windows update that was installed on 13th Dec "December 10, 2019—KB4530684 (OS Builds 18362.535 and 18363.535)")

Do you have your music HDD covered by Defender?

I have a working drive covered but my Audio and Video drives excluded. I move files to the unprotected drives once I am happy the tags are good etc

I did the Win 10 update and MC 26 but I have only imported small numbers

I have already excluded the JRiver program folder, JRiver Database folder and also the HDD folders that I keep my audio and video in from Defender.

Has anyone else with the MC26 crashes also had EXACTLY the same problem when uninstalling MC26 and reinstalling MC25? No MC26 anymore but MC25 won't run unless I disable the "create thumbnails" part of import.

(MC25 also crashes when running it as a parallel install alongside MC26 as they can co-exist on the same system)

It strikes me that this must hold a key as to why MC26 is crashing in the 26.0.12 version.

My previous MC25 worked perfectly.
I uninstalled MC25 and installed MC26, then uninstalled MC26 due to crashes.

Re-installing MC25 from fresh now also results in MC25 crashing. There is something about the MC26 install that is lingering and interfering with a fresh install of MC25

Are you running the last build of MC25 (115)?
I found that crashes on auto-import too, whereas MC 25 114 did not. Could it be the same bug was introduced into both MC25 115 and MC26 12 at the same time?
