ClearOS headless .rpm JRiver Media center files
« on: December 25, 2019, 11:26:59 pm »

Hi
I have ClearOS server that has been chugging along for years. I changed the hardware few times and it has everything that I need. I use PLEX for video and pictures, however for audio, plex is not solution. Yet.Since version 19 of JRiver media center I wanted to buy and install it but was not available in .rpm. I have tried to use alien to convert the Deb file to an rpm, but I failed miserably.
Is there ever going to be, at least audio only like raspberry pi version, rpm version of the JRiver?

Considering Debian is the only officially supported distro for JRiver Media Center, I don't see them providing .rpm files for any unsupported distros themselves. That said, you can convert them yourself and on Fedora and CentOS BryanC has a script that can convert MC's .deb file to a .rpm file here.

In the past I've been able to run Bryan's script on Ubuntu to convert the .deb file to a .rpm file (you need to make sure all dependencies are installed), so it could work... or it may not.

P.S. The Raspberry Pi ARM version of MC is still only available as a .deb file.

I'll test this out today on ClearOS. The issue is that since MC is such a monolithic program it requires a lot of dependencies that may or may not be in the ClearOS repos.

Another option is to go the Docker route. I'm currently trying to build an MC/Guacamole container but recent changes in Fedora have delayed my efforts. There are some other good MC containers already out there (by shiomax and jatzoo) using VNC and WebGUI, but they are geared towards server use. If you are trying to play audio locally you may have to do some additional configuration to get Pulse set up.

I just finished testing out ClearOS (having had zero familiarity with it previously). Unfortunately, since it is based on CentOS 7 there is currently no way that you will be able to get MC to work on ClearOS due to ABI incompatibilities. Also, since there is no supported upgrade path between CentOS 7 and CentOS 8, it is very likely that you will need to do a full reinstall in order to get MC running once ClearOS 8 is released. In that case it may make more sense to just go ahead and install CentOS 8 due to the advances in RHEL's cockpit management package that has improved its web-based admin.

Thanks for the help.
Do I understand correctly that JRiver might work on CentOS/ClearOS 8?

Yes, it definitely works on CentOS 8. I'm not sure how easily ClearOS handles dummy X servers, but it should also work on ClearOS 8 if you are able to configure it.

On CentOS 8, in which desktop environment are you running MC 25?

I'm hoping I can run MC25 in KDE Plasma (currently have OpenSuSE Tumbleweed installed, but I could switch to CentOS 8  ).

Thanks for any insights!

I usually just test on default GNOME. It really shouldn't matter much which DE you use.
