Trouble playing native DSD (.dsf) files
« on: April 29, 2019, 07:59:25 pm »

Newbie here to playing hi-res audio downloads via PC to stereo.  I have Windows 10 and my PC is connected to my Marantz AV7704 pre/pro via HDMI cable.  I want to play downloaded DSD (.dsf) files (Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed) without compromise.  I've only been able to play them using JRiver via DirectSound.  I've read that this is not transferring as "unmolested" audio file (?).  I was successful in playing these songs via Foobar2000 and downloading a SACD & Wasapi component files.  I'd like to move forward with JRiver, but I'm having difficulty finding the correct settings.  I get an error.  Would appreciate any help.  Thanks!!

To get DSD playback working, you have to enable DSD bitstreaming. Unfortunately though, it's not possible to bitstream DSD from a computer via HDMI. This is because no onboard or dedicated GPU manufacturer (Intel, Nvidia, AMD, etc.) supports DSD in any of their GPU drivers which is what would be required to get it working over HDMI. DSD over HDMI does work if you take a piece of hardware like an Oppo with SACD support and connect that to the receiver via HDMI, but not from any type of computer.

It *might* be possible to get it working through DLNA via DSD over DLNA (DoPE), which is likely the only way to get it working with a Marantz AV7704.

P.S. You might think it's working with foobar2000, but it's likely converting the DSD file to PCM when playing it.

Foobar most certainly does not convert DSD/DSF to PCM. However, one would need a DSD capable DAC to play DSD from Foobar.
