Strange Playback Problem - Need Assistant
« on: October 31, 2019, 02:51:56 pm »

Hi,

I am a new user and didn't know where to post the problem exactly
Also couldn't find any support email from jriver

I have a strange issue only with FLAC files (not all FLAC files)

setup: Mac mini 2006 connected USB to topping DX7pro (same issue with topping D30), files are located on NFS Server MC 24 and 25
many FLAC files are playing slow and corrupted (that the best description for the problem)
I have many SACD's and DFF files that works fine and clear

My troubleshootings:

1. Size of the files is not the problem since some of the FLACS are only 25MB and with ISO's 4GB it plays perfect
So No Networks latency or USB2 playing slow
2. Mac mini was replaced with windows PC Or MacBook Pro 2018 but same problem with all the PC hardware I tried with this specific FILES (many of them)
3. When playing the same files using popcorn hour A400 to the DAC using coax/opti(all audio settings are set to direct) files are playing perfect , no issues
4. The only thing I didn't replaced is the USB cable since Large files are playing with no problem
5. No problems at all with any SACD files (ISO,FLAC,DFF)

My settings in MC are DSD DX7pro where ever I could choose that

I am out of ideas, I think its encoding related maybe but don't know which one

Thanks in advanced

What you are describing might be caused by the wrong sample rate being used for playback.  You can get some good diagnostic information about the file that is playing, how MC is processing it, including any DSP that might be applied by:

Player > Audio Path

Pay attention to the top where it says "input" and at the bottom where it says "output".

It's possible that your DAC only likes certain sample rates via USB.  It might accept different rates via optical or coaxial.  If necessary, you can set MC to use specific sample rates and resample your music to the proper rate that your DAC likes.

Or this might have nothing at all to do with it.  Looking at the Audio Path should give you some good clues.

I set the output from DOP format to NONE

looks like the problem is finally solved
based on topping document its written to choose DSD bitstream in DOP format
what that means to set it to NONE  :o ?

Thanks

This shows that the input in 96kHz, 24 bit PCM audio.  It also shows that you have the DSP, Output Format, set to re-encode everything as 1x DSD over DoP.  That means that all audio types, including all sample rates of PCM, will be converted to DSD and then sent to your DAC.  You probably did not mean to do this.  This part of MC's DSP Output Format is pretty confusing.  It's almost never necessary to use this setting.

I see in your next message that you turned this off by setting it to "None".  That means that MC will not try to convert PCM to DSD.  That is the setting I recommend.

See my next post for more explanation.

As per my previous post, you did the right thing.  So now PCM will be sent to your DAC "natively" as PCM and not be converted to DSD.

But you probably also want to send DSD as DSD, so your DAC can decode the native DSD signal.  As it is set up now, MC is converting DSD to PCM before sending it to your DAC.  Let's set it to keep DSD as DSD:

Tools > Options > Audio > Settings > Bitstreaming > DSD

That should tell MC to send your DSD files unchanged to your DAC.  I believe the Mac version of MC always uses DSD over DoP, so that should work correctly.

Note that this is bitstreaming, which means that nothing gets changed for these DSD files.  So no DSP is applied, no EQ, etc.  If you want to use those features with DSD files, it won't work with bitstreaming.  Most people very concerned about DSD don't want to use DSP anyway.  I'm just mentioning it in case you care.

Good luck,

Brian.

Hi Brian,

Thanks, yes I guess you keep zones for each settings
MC is amazing with all these options , it takes a bit time to learn all this
I hope you will keep the support for OX 10.7
It works really fast on this old Mac mini, its nice to see that old hardware works so good with a good code writen application
so it will be a waste not to use this Mac mini

until next time :)

Thanks

Hi there, this is my first post.

I have similar problems with Player, if I set it to Beatstreaming DSD, it will play DSD and Flac, only that the Chord 2Qute DAC will indicate that the DSD file is is playing a PCM 384kHz. So I understand the the DSD file is not reaching the DAC as DSD.

If I choose the output mode to DSD, the DAC will indicate its DSD on its coloured fiel indicator, but FLAC files wil start to skip, some sort up sampling problem.

Any suggestions?

Greetings from Chile

forster Leipzig

Start a separate post on this rather than tagging along.  Better chance to get an answer.
