Media Center 26 shutting down every few minutes
« on: February 11, 2020, 08:32:29 pm »

I was using MC 25 and was having a problem. Posted https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,124110.0.html

I thought that a clean install of Windows 10 + using MC 26 would solve the issue. Initially, I thought it had. But after more usage, the problem has returned and the program is unusable again. Figured my thread from the MC25 board could just be moved into here.

Thanks,
Steve

Please report the full version of MC when you post.

Details on what you're doing when it shuts down might also help.

What antivirus are you using?  Did you try uninstalling it?

It would help to have the crash dump shown in this partial log.  Take a look at the file it's analyzing.  Can you play it?

steveklein,
Please update to MC 26.0.22.

Make sure you have configured Windows Defender:

I did add the 3 folders for J River into the exception list for Windows Defender. It did not solve the issue. I am running 26.0.20 (not .22) as I just use the auto-update to stable feature within the program.

When I try to play that file in the log file o mentioned, the program does crash immediately. I did it three times and all three times immediate crash. I was able to play other files, even other files in that same directory... but that file did crash it immediately.

However, the program still crashes when I *don't* play that file... it just takes a minute or two. I have scrubbed that file from my system completely.

Here is a log of the most recent crash. Also, where can I send the dump file if ya'll need that to troubleshoot?

Edit: I see from the log file another file to delete and remopve from library. Which I have. No time to test until after work for me now, but I will report back. Thanks, Steve

Using the latest 26.0.22 is highly recommended, as any crashing issues may already be fixed in the newer MC26 build.

I'd recommend to anyone encountering crashing issues to always update to the latest build available and try to reproduce any crashing issues with the latest build, as there's a chance the issue might already be fixed. I wouldn't worry too much about the latest builds being less stable, in general even builds in the latest channel are very stable.

I will upgrade to it when I get home tonight but this has been persistent for 100s of builds.

Really, I would like this issue to be solved on MC25 (the software I've paid for!) and I have used the latest builds on MC25 and get crashes. I only tried 26 to see if it solved the crashes and it has not.

Looking at the last two logs, I see this right before it crashes each time...

Code: [Select]
0090312: 4420: Import: AnalyzeAudio: Analyzing: F:\TV On Demand\Friends\Season 2\Friends - S02 E11 - The One WIth The Lesbian Wedding (January 18, 1996).avi
Also looking at the logs before that...

Code: [Select]
0072640: 7628: Import: AnalyzeAudio: Analyzing: F:\TV On Demand\Friends\Season 2\Friends - S02 E10 - The One With Russ (January 4, 1996).avi
Chances are you've got a bad files. I'd recommend moving that Season 2 folder for Friends out of your TV On Demand folder to see if it stops the crashing when auto-import is running. Also as a test (I suspect) if you disable auto-import, MC26 will stop crashing. If that's indeed the case, that more-or-less confirms bad files are to blame here.

If the avi file won't play in MC, it may be a corrupt file.  If you have one, you may have others.

Can you share the file?

Does it play in any other player?

As Awesome Donkey said, always try the latest build before reporting a problem.

I just deleted the bad files and haven't looked back. Everything appears to be working okay.

As an aside... these files have been in my library for years. It is possible that they have recently become corrupt. However, one thing I noticed that was added in the last few iterations of MC was audio analysis of video tracks. And it appears that is when the program was crashing when it ran into those files.

Is it possible that could be related?

Did you save any of the bad files so you could share with me (matt at jriver)?  We love finding and fixing problems like this.  Thanks!
