Subtitles not working (television)
« on: January 26, 2020, 11:42:09 am »

I cannot get subtitles to work on live TV in MC26. This was definitely working in earlier versions of MC24.

Tuner is Hauppauge Quad HD DVB-T2 (UK). I tried reinstalling J River from scratch but it made no difference. Subtitle options come up in the menu but selecting them doesn't do anything.

Subs work fine in all other videos.

I assume it's just me experiencing this - can't see other users with this problem, which is a tad frustrating!

I've moved your thread over to the Television forum. Hopefully Yaobing can help to figure this out!

Are you using the latest version of MC26?

Did you ever try MC25?  All subtitle work were done in MC24 and MC25.

Did you reboot after installing?  I had some weird issues (not related to subtitles though) that went away after rebooting.  If you had not already done it, you should do it.

Hi Yaobing

Really appreciate some help with this...

I've tried quite a few things including plenty of reboots in between but to no avail (I use EPG collector but tried switching to OTA, tried Setup/Cleanup settings in TV, tried Red October Standard and HQ etc....). I also wondered if my card is faulty, but TV subs work fine with (for example) Media Portal.

What I know is that at some point using some version of MC24 subtitles were working fine. I can't remember what version exactly, but I have gone back and tried various versions of MC24 and MC26 without luck now.

Maybe a red herring but the options for subs/audio seem to be different between MC24 and MC26. For example, for the same channel in MC24.0.75 I get
Audio Programs > PID 1502, English-2 Audio
Subtitles > Off (no other options)

Same channel (and same JRiver settings AFAIK) MC26.0.19 I get
Audio Programs > PID 1502, English-2 Audio AND PID 1503, English-2 Audio
Subtitles > 1531 English [eng] (dvbsub) AND Off

Seems strange in itself - e.g. MC24 is not seeing any subtitles. MC26 is, but selecting them but doesn't make them appear.

Is there any debugging/error logs I can check?

For what it's worth, turning on logging, and try to reproduce the issue.  Then collect the log files and post or email to me.  yaobing at jriver

Thanks Yaobing. Just to try and really rule things out I started with a clean OS build of Win 10 and installed the latest version of MC26. Same result.

For a test, please change recording format to TS, and make a recording.  Play the recording.  Are you able to get subtitles that way?

Yes - subtitles work on ts recorded TV!

Switching back to jtv and they don't work as per live.

Can you share a sample recording in JTV format?  You need to upload it in a file server/cloud (such as OneDrive, DropBox etc.) and share the link with me.  email or PM me the link if you don't want it to be public.  yaobing at jriver

Thanks.

I found a bug which might have caused the issue.

Please try this DLL (JRTelevision.dll).

Unzip, and copy the DLL into MC26 installation folder.

Too bad!  I was so hopeful.

Please capture another log, using this DLL.

After examining your log file carefully, I found that DVB Subtitle data are being passed down.  Playback engine did pick up samples of subtitle data, and passed a few of them them to the decoder, until subtitle is turned off (the requested PID was changed from 105 to 0x1FFF).  Did you remember to turn on subtitling using right-click menu?

Yes - well in this case I was using the OSD in Theatre View but the behaviour is exactly the same when using right click context.

I do see the video very, very briefly stutter when subs are selected on, but absolutely no displaying of them.

Just to be clear, for the last log I selected a channel and then selected subtitles on. That was it. I never switched them from on to off again. If I'm reading correctly it sounds as though the log shows them being switched off?

All steps:
Started logging (normal interface)
Opened Theatre View
Selected a channel with subs
Cursor down for OSD and switched subs from off to on
Let channel play for a bit
Exited Theatre View and copied log

Yes, the log showed that a few subtitle packets were sent down stream and the subtitle decoder got the data.  Then at one point the data stopped coming, and at the upstream we see the "requested subtitle ID" was an invalid value.

This is the right procedure.

Please make another JTV recording, using the DLL I posted.  I would like to test the recording and see if I can identify anything this way since I can not access live stream.

New rec uploaded (same share as before) with dll.

I also included a log (sequence was start logging, open Theatre View, start channel, record, start subs, stop rec, try to play rec).

A few things I noted...

Probably unrelated, but when I stop the recording and try to play it I get the message 'No television tuner is available to fulfil your request. Please make sure you have a device that is not in use'. This is despite the fact I'm not recording anything a this point and I have four tuner card anyway. I have to exit MC and open it again to be able to play recordings.

In the example I just uploaded, the sub track when watching live was listed as '1231 English [eng] (dvbsub)'. In the recording it's '1231 English'.

Again, probably unrelated, but something weird happened once when time shifting with ts recording format where the signal strength info was displayed and wouldn't go away after trying to turn subs on (even persisted after changing channels). Had to go out of TV and back again to get it too go away. Not been able to repeat this though.....

Thanks.  Received.

Unfortunately, the recording still does not contain subtitle packets.  The mystery thickens.  I will look for clues in the log file.

Next time this happens, you can take a look at "TV Logs" and "Show status" in Standard View.  There might be some clues there.

The signal strength display can appear in two ways - 1. The OSD menu, using up or down arrow.  It disappears in a few seconds.  2. Using right-click menu "Show signal strength on screen".  This display keeps coming back to screen until you un-check the menu item.

So a possible explanation is you accidentally turned it on.

Thanks yaobing.

Re. Stange signal strength display. This happened in theatre view. Understand the sequences that can lead to this in the osd but it was not the normal osd. It was single line signal strength text with semi transparent grey background. Will take a pic or screeenshot if it happens again but hasn't been repeatable and unwanted red herring so no worries.

Let me know if further captures would help with the subs issue.

A single line signal strength display likely is from using right-click menu "Show signal strength on screen".

Anyway, back to the more important stuff.  The reason why the latest recording you made did not contain any subtitle packets is because you did not use the DLL that I posted.  You upgraded to build 20 and probably did not remember to copy the test DLL.  Can you try again?  Download the DLL and copy it into MC installation folder.

Yes, I updated to build 20, but I did replace the DLL before the capture (prog dir in pic). It is possible I hadn't restarted MC after doing so.

New capture and log uploaded after rebooting.

Sorry, I was distracted by other matters.  The JTV recording you provided now has the subtitle packets, but we are still not displaying them.  I am puzzled.  I will have to double-check and see if we handle the packets correctly.  Did you say that recordings in TS format worked just fine?

Thanks for the heads-up. Yes they are now working in .29 :-)...

...One hitch though... After a channel change, selecting subs does nothing again. Simple to recreate (at least on my setup):

(1) Start a channel (e.g. select watch in TV Guide in Theatre View)
(2) Put subs on through OSD - now works
(3) Change channel (e.g. ch+/-, or in TV guide...)
(4) Put subs on through OSD - doesn't work
Have to....
(5) Stop TV
(6) Start channel (e.g. one selected in step 3)
(7) Put subs on through OSD - now works

Download, unzip and copy JRTelevision.dll into MC installation folder, and MJTSFileReader.ax into the TV subfolder.

 :(

Please provide a sample recording and logs.  Follow the following steps:

1. Make sure logging is on.  Restart MC.
2. Start playing a channel (in time-shifting mode) that you know carries subtitles.  Turn subtitle on if it is not already on, and confirm it is working.
3. Switch to another channel that you know carries subtitles.  Try turning on subtitle.
4. Right-click > TV Options > Save current time-shifting on stop > Save
5. Stop playback.
6. Capture logs.

A recording in JTV format will be saved.

Forward both the recording (entire folder) and the logs.  Thanks.
