DVB-T : cannot get rid of subtitles
« on: March 08, 2020, 10:59:35 am »

Hi,

I'm using MC26 with a DVB-T tuner card Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2200.

On some channels, weirdly, I cannot get rid of the subtitles. Here's what I get:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/uBHfssnfQwfeDXLH9

But if I select subtitles, all I see is N/A in grey...

Does it happen on all shows?  Maybe the show itself had subtitles burned onto the video?

It's been happening on several channels since a few days, and these channels definitely don't force subs (confirmed on my SONY tv). These subs don't look like regulard subtitles, but more like teletext ones, with weirdly flashy colors...

Please share with me a short recording in JTV format (or a saved time-shifting session), and logs.  Upload the files onto a file sharing server, and PM or email me the link.  I am yaobing at jriver

Got the JTV recording.

Strangely, it behaves correctly.  Were you playing live TV in time-shifting mode?  JTV recording is closest I can get to live time-shifting mode.  If JTV recording works for me here, time-shifting should work for you.

If you were playing in non-time-shifting mode, then it is another story.

Ok, this is weird:
- Following your answere, I played my own recording in JRiver: I can deactivate the subtitles now, because the subtitle stream is detected again (and thus can be deactivated).
- When I played this show live: the subs were then forced and the sub stream wasn't available for deactivation.

And now it *seems* that having deactivated them in the recorded program, it's also gone in the live streams... cannot be sure though since it can be the program that do not embed some subs, I will monitor the situation.

EDIT:
There's definitely a bug somewhere: I just browsed through the channels, live, and now I can deactivate the subs agains whenever available. BUT, when I'm turning them off, the streams disappear altogether, I cannot access them again! So it's really the same problem, but in reverse: Subs are forced off now and cannot be turned on (they do not appear as sub streams, but I know that they exist since they were available seconds ago).

Did this involve switching channels live (i.e. playing a channel, then switch to another channel without pressing Stop)?

You can not turn a subtitle on even after you restart playing the channel?

Another thing I should have asked you is how long did you wait.  Did you wait long enough (30 seconds minimum) to check Subtitles?

Ok, I tested on a 3rd PC on my network, no problem:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/BPWebT12uHuTFkoT7

When I'm on my server PC, here's what it looks like  (now I'm in always-off subtitles mode, it seems).
https://photos.app.goo.gl/tLkRjMGiXSvfoiBN8 (no idead why it does not upload in HD).

1st strange thing: you'll note subtitles appearing rapidly just after changing channels (subtitles belonging to 1st channel).

2nd strange thing I noted (not displayed here): the subtitles stream displayed first "N/A" in grey, then "Off" (with a check, with no other streams available on a program that had subtitles).

Also, maybe related: I seem unable to load EPG from OTA source (my SONY TV does it just fine, from the same antenna, same plug even).

Are there any obvious differences between the two computers?  Are the tuners the same?  Are you using the same Red October modes?

Please provide a log.

Help > Logging... to turn on logging.

Then view a channel, check right-click menu for subtitle.  Switch to a new channel and do the same.  Stop.  Help > Logging...> Report Problem...

Run a different log with this issue after restarting MC.
