native PCM and DSD automatic playback
« on: February 26, 2020, 09:06:08 pm »

Is there a way the MC25 can be configured to play back PCM and DSD files in their native formats automatically? It seems that if I disable bitstreaming, DSD is converted to PCM, and If I enable bitstreaming (DSD), PCM is converted to DSD (with lots of dropouts).

thanks

Sounds like you have DSP Studio > Output Format set to convert everything to DSD. I'd disable any Output Format settings if I were you.

Then, you can use ZoneSwitch to switch between DSD and everything else.

I do not have any output format conversion selected. My setting is as follows:

DSP Studio > Output Format > Output Decoding = none

In this case, MC converts DSD files to 352.8kHz PCM, per my DAC display. If I select Output Decoding = DSD, then the DSD file plays as expected (DAC indicates that it is playing a DSD file), but all PCM files are converted to DSD, with many dropouts.

Once I get by this issue, I will then try to figure out what ZoneSwitch is.

It seems, however, that I should be able to configure MC so that it plays audio files in their native formats without further intervention on my part.

Don't use Output Encoding for DSD, otherwise MC will convert everything to DSD (even files which are already DSD, which is a lossy conversion), which is what's likely causing your dropouts because the conversion is an on-the-fly process which is VERY resource intensive. Dropouts like that during the on-the-fly conversion process usually means your CPU in your machine isn't powerful enough to handle those on-the-fly DSD conversions.

Instead, enable DSD bitstreaming.
