Duplicate files in library listing
« on: April 28, 2003, 11:21:29 am »

I have a number of albums which show each track twice in the library, with identical attributes.  I can eliminate them by changing an attribute (eg, album) and then using the "rename files from properties" option.

How did the duplicate library references get there?
Is there a way for me to reliminate all duplicate library entries?
I have confirmed that the files only exist once on the hard drive.

I am using 9.061 on a high end machine with ~ 6000 files in mp3 format.

first Do this

File, Library, Update Library

[X] Remove Files That Do Not Exist

[Update]

=============================

then you can go to Play Lists.

Select: "Task -- Possible Duplicates"

Task -- possible duplicates?

What? I don't have that smartlist/playlist. How do I create it? That's exactly the smartlist/playlist I need!

I've also been having a lot of problems with duplicate files appearing in my library. Usually, one of the library entires won't actually work, while the other one does. This usually seems to happen when a library entry stops working (for unknown reasons; I think MC9 is failing to properly rename some files and update all tags, causing minor problems such as this and a lot of lost tag info) . . . and then I scan my files for new imports . . . at which point the supposedly non-existent file will be re-imported, and will now work . . . but the duplicate (the origainl lbray entry) will continue not to work. Sometimes I've ended up with as many as 4 duplicates of one mp3 file. This didn't start happening until the latest builds of MC9 (over the last month).

The update libray functions takes care of most, but not all, of the problems.

Upgrade To MC 9.0.162 For One

it should have it, if not

~dups

then add this

[artist],[name],[duration]

then

~sort

then add

[artist],[name],[Bitrate],[duration]

(or what ever sort you want)

I can definitely say that -in this or a recent build-, MC was creating duplicate entries, and further, that the "remove files which do not exist"  would not get rid of the entries.  All attributes, including the ones mentioned above I think, were identitical... short of deleting them individually (thousands of entries ?) there is only one solution I have found : changing an attribute used in the directory structure or name, and then renaming the files from properties  This would generate an error for each duplicate and remove it from the database, leaving only the true files behind.

Hey KingSparta . . . I definitely didn't have the "Task -- possible duplicates" option (still didn't have it with 9.0.163). But using your smart-list instructions worked wonderfully, and the "possible dupes" smartlist has found 300 duplicates. Awesome! Thanks!

Also, the newest builds of MC9 don't seem to be generating the dupes anymore, as far as I can tell . . .  so that's good.
