MP4 Codec Decisions
« on: March 18, 2020, 02:55:51 pm »

I need to convert FLAC files to MP4.  This will be for my car.  All of my music on my thumb drive is in MP4 format, and I like consistency.  I was using dbpoweramp for file conversion, but I have uninstalled it now for reasons I won't get into here.

It looks like MC26 does not yet support MP4/M4A audio on its own.  QuickTime is now outdated and dropped by Apple.

I am a licensed user of 64-bit Sound Forge version 12, and it has a batch converter built in that supports dithering of 24-bit to 16-bit to MP4.  However, it has three different codecs built into it.  Out of these three, which would you imagine is the best in terms of audio quality?:

MainConcept AVC/AAC MP4
Sony AVC/AAC MP4
XDCAM EX MP4

So I selected the Sony AVC/AAC encoder, because it is newer.  It's a CBR file that I encoded at 256kb/s.  An 8 minute 16 second file has a size of 15.2MB.  These files are all going onto my 64GB thumb drive, and I have tons of space available with over 7,000 songs on a single thumb drive.
