Trying to stream DSD to Sony X800m2
« on: March 16, 2020, 12:04:26 am »

I've been trying to find a "universal" solution for streaming audio to my Denon surround receiver (including DSD and multichannel audio.)  I have an Oppo 203 which does a pretty good job, other than not supporting gapless playback.

I recently came to believe (from various internet chatter) than the Sony X800 would do the job.  So I picked one up (specifically an x800m2).

Unfortunately, I can't get JRiver to successfully stream any DSD to it at all (specifically I have .dsf files.)  It pops a dialog saying "There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA device."  PCM format music seems to work OK.

I have what I think are the correct options checked (audio set to mode: original, and Bitstream DSD off.)  Other options are default.  (Also I've tried randomly changing anything which seems like it might affect things, with no luck.)

Anybody had experience with JRiver + sony Blu-ray player DSD streaming?
Any ideas on how to diagnose what the issue is, are there log files to examine or somesuch?

Download the DMRA from my sig, and run the test. It will tell you what formats your renderer supports.

Great tool - thanks!

After fiddling, looks like it supports x-dsd, but not x-dsf.  I wonder if these are equivalent, is there a way to alter the MIME type here?

I found the "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 26\Data\Default Resources\FileAssociations.xml"  file.  I changed x-dsf to x-dsd and now it works.

Not sure if this is the right long term fix or if it will cause other problems...

Now that I have more context, I see this is the same issue on this thread: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,122263.50.html , although that was with a Sony receiver.

Hi seantrow glad you sorted your issue.
I too have be searching for a streamer that does it all and also currently have an Oppo 203.
Does the Sony X800 actually do multi-channel PCM and DSD gapless?

Theoretically.  I will report back after I get a chance to experiment.

Sadly, even though the player supports SetNext, there are still short gaps between tracks.  :(  This seems true for all types of audio.

Yes I think that is indeed the correct long term fix. It’s not a pretty thing, but if it works...
