Problem Ripping CD's
« on: March 14, 2020, 01:58:22 pm »

I seem to have a ripping problem as well. I thought it was Windows 10, but it seems to be JRiver26. I insert the CD, and get a message that there is no disc in the drive. Or, intermittently JRiver does rip a disc, but then every disc I try after the 1st one comes up as the 1st one to be ripped again. If I manage to close JRiver, I can rip the CD with Exact Audio Copy. This didn't happen right away-I've been doing this successfully with JRiver26 for a while, then suddenly the problem began a few days ago.
Any help would be appreciated.

Could be an antivirus problem.

I cannot play or rip a CD.  Installed MC 26.0.30 64-bit yesterday on Win 10 PC with stock anti-virus.  This pop-up message appears when I try to rip: "The output directory could not be created for one or more files. Please double-check the output directory in the ripping options."  Ripping options are exactly the same as on my Win 7 64-bit laptop running Bitdefender AV.  I installed same MC 26 version on my laptop a few days ago and it is playing and ripping CDs fine.

MC26 correctly loads CD information on my Win 10 PC, but when I click 'Play' it rapidly skips down through all tracks then stops--takes about 5 seconds.  When I click on 'Rip Tracks,' I receive the pop-up message above.  BTW, I had been successfully using the old MJ12 on this PC prior to today, but it started popping up a message about "permission error accessing CD drive" after I installed MC26.  I uninstalled MJ12, but MC26 is still not playing or ripping a CD.

Played a CD using WMP, so no problem with CD/DVD drive.

Updated to MC 26.0.56 (64-bit) with no change.  Still not playing or ripping.

Help please.

FWIW Just connected my USB drive to Win10 PC and inserted disc. MC prompted me that do I want to: "play, rip, or do nothing". I selected rip which initiated MC to fetch the tags and start ripping to FLAC.

With one click I got a secure rip in lossless format in my specified folder structure.

The most likely cause is an antivirus program.  You need to configure Bitdefender to allow MC26.  Any previous configuration won't  work for the newer version.

I use BitDefender Total Security 2020

Here are my settings that I think matter:

Protection -> Antivirus -> Settings -> Drivers & Devices :
Scan CD & DVD: Ask Every Time
Scan Mapped Network Drives: Ask Every Time
You can disable those … if its your network and your CDs/DVDs/BluRays

Protection -> Antivirus -> Settings -> Manage Exceptions :
Add exception (both on-demand and on-access) for your media folders … MC installation folder (eg. C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 26) … and application data for MC (eg C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\J River)

Protection -> Advance Thread Detection -> Manage Exceptions :
Click Add Exception … add all executables/dll from MC installation folder (eg. from C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 26) … disable all protection for them (Online Threat Prevention, Advanced Threat Defense, Antivirus On-Access/On-Demand/Embedded scripts)

That should do it

EDIT: as Jim mention … you set above for one major update of MC (eg. MC26) … miner updates will be covered by this (26.0.36, 26.052, etc) … once new major update comes (eg MC27), you will need to redo this again
