Bluesound Node, BluOS and JRiver
« on: April 18, 2020, 11:37:27 am »

I recently added a Bluesound Node (also looked at NAD M10) to my setting and I love it. It has three problems still: 1. No native DSD support, 2. No Video (maybe for most not too important, but I am dying to have a videophile streamer); 3. No JRiver support for BluOS. Other services, including Roon are on BluOS.

I consider the BluOS setup way superior to a NUC solution (or Chromecast, etc.) and I expect further progress in BluOS and players/software which support it (like NAD, Bluesound and Roon).

I would urged the JRiver team to seriously develop JRiver support for BluOS. Roon supports it and has it own NUC solution (which I consider way overpriced.

Personally (as just another user like you), in my opinion I wouldn't hold my breath on this. I would HIGHLY be surprised if JRiver ever invested development time and money on this.

If I recall correctly BluOS, I believe, is based on Linux but has become a proprietary OS/platform so this is probably a non-starter when considering the investment for little when it comes to any potential return on the investment. Unless it's a Debian-based OS and you can sideload/install .deb files and run MC for Linux on it, I just wouldn't hold my breath, again, IMO.

I am not a Roon user, but after some research, it seems that Roon has implemented a way to connect to Bluesound devices as end nodes. Bluesound does not implement DLNA, with the reason often given that Bluesound wants to be able to keep speakers in sync, which they cannot do with DLNA. In the Roon Audio section, it simply lists Bluesound devices, both speakers and nodes, as output devices.  Its hard to figure out if Roon figured out how to do that themselves or go help from Bluesound.

JRiver has said in the past that since Bluesound is not DLNA compliant, they will not invest in connecting to Bluesound devices.

I am not a Bluesound user. I just wanted to provide some background.
