.desktop files don't need to be executable, at least I've never seen them be.

I haven't tried it but I'll take a look. I've just been using my script/spec file for so long I'm used to it. :)

It looks like you disable all that stuff with

Bob, I can do that as well if it's a pain to remove the executable bits.

It's just a change to the script that builds the .deb. If it's the right thing to do we should be doing it anyway.
