MC25 will not play ripped DVDs only Bluray
« on: May 08, 2020, 07:14:21 am »

I have been running JRiver for many years (and versions) for watching movies, playing music etc.

However, in the last few days when I try to play a ripped DVD I get the sound but the screen is blank. If I play a ripped Bluray, it appears fine. So I though it could be an upscaling issue and have tried changing those settings but to no avail.

I have restored the settings from a known good backup and still it does not work. I have completely removed JRiver and its settings and reinstalled version 25.0.115 both 64 bit and 32, again neither work.

If I play the movie using VLC on the same machine, everything is fine. If I do to another machine with JRiver, that too is fine!

I have also tried MC26 but still have the same issue. Perhaps it could be a Windows Update issue....I will try resetting PC.

I am perplexed...does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Ian

Update: Did a fresh install of Windows 10, then installed JRiver MC25 and nothing else. Still would not play DVD based films). I am suspecting something in Windows has changed due to a recent update that is stopping any version of JRiver from working since I have tried MC 26 as well. I have other machines on on the same version of Windows/Updates and same MC25 version but different hardware and they work okay. VLC does work however so this appears to be a JRiver Media Center issue.

As far as I know, Media Center uses Windows' component(s) to playback DVD, and VLC uses its own.

You might try ripping DVD to MKV (using the excellent MakeMKV) ans see if that works as a workaround.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

Thanks for the response.

Yes I already use MakeMKV as my ripping software and it is good.

Strangely Windows 10 "Films & TV" plays the DVD based mkv files fine, as does VLC. So I am suspecting it is an issue with its Red October Engine and some incompatibility with a recent Windows 10 Update and my hardware.

It is a real shame, JRiver plays Bluray based mkv fine, it is only the lower resolution DVD based ones - though I do get the sound coming through!

Like I said above, I even did a fresh windows install and then put JRiver on (and even turned off the anti-virus) and it still didnt work.

It looks like I will have to move away from JRiver after all these years if I cant find a fix - though I could try installing Linux and see if that solves it.
