Loud continuous noise after playing DSD64 files
« on: May 16, 2020, 07:30:51 am »

Hi! I have a strange problem. Setup first:
Windows 10 PC, latest updates, Sabaj D5 USB, with 4.67 driver installed and latest firmware -> headphones.

JRiver latest version.

Files: FLAC 24/44 24/96 etc + SACD DSD64 ISO and DSF.

any files plays correctly bitperfect through the Sabaj. BUT: If I play FIRST a DSD file, then a PCM file, then AGAIN a DSD file when I STOP playback I get a continuous loud digital noise that does not stop even if I close JRiver. It stops only if I play another PCM file. Basically playback is fine if in one listening session I play only DSD files, or only PCM files.

It is as if JRiver does not switch back properly to PCM after playing the last DSD file (but it does switch back to PCM normally if before the DSD file I haven't played PCM). It's very strange.

This issue happens only with ASIO. No problem with WASAPI or Kernel Streaming and I have no problem using ASIO for DSD/PCM playback in Foobar2000.

Any clues?
Thanks!

It may be a DAC problem.  Try using MC's DSP Studio > Output Settings to convert everything to the same format.

Thanks. I don’t think so though, as playback is fine in Foobar.

That doesn't rule out a problem with the DAC.

Also foobar2000 is a 32-bit Windows application, so if you're using the 64-bit version of JRiver Media Center on Windows you might try using the 32-bit version instead.

Thanks. As for the DAC, I agree but still since in other software it works normally it seems a bit more likely that there’s something going on in , perhaps a setting that I am missing? In a previous thread I reported a similar problem with two other DACs (fiio k3 and ifi zen) except that instead of producing digital noise the dac simply did not work if I closed JRiver after playing PCM and then DSD. The problem happens only with ASIO, not WASAPI. In WASAPI the dac takes DSD in dop not native, so it does not have to switch back and forth PCM, which I guess is why I have No problem. With ASIO it has to switch from PCM to DSD native and while this switch does not cause any problem in Foobar in JRiver it seems to cause issues for me?

That it works with WASAPI and not ASIO points to the device and driver.  As Awesome Donkey said, try the 32 bit version of  MC.

Yeah well it point to the problem being the interaction between JRiver and the asio driver, since the same asio driver works fine in Foobar!
I’ll try the 32 bit version, thanks!

Ok, so same problem with JRiver 32 bit.

I have now had the time to test and this spike of loud noise is generated ONLY when I use ASIO and I play first a 96khz PCM track, then a DSD64 (native) track and then hit STOP. It does not happen at any other PCM frequency.
This is really strange!
